Manhattan Liquors Closes

We're sorry to have to report another shuttered storefront.  Manhattan Food & Liquor, at Buena and Broadway, closed earlier this month.  The store is dark and there are "Store For Rent" signs in the window.

  1. Thank goodness. Hopefully we can get a nice bakery or pet shop there. The Jewel down the street provides enough booze. When I shop early there is a security guard who watches the customers line up to buy booze at 7AM.

  2. I never have read a negative word about Manhattan Liquors--so I'm guessing that it did not contribute to problems in the surrounding blocks. Disappointing to see a neighborhood business close their doors.

Unfortunately, americanlt, the post isn't about Jewel or their alcohol sales. But maybe some business that sells only "Hello, Kitty" merchandise will open up in the Manhattan Liquors location...I expect you to single-handedly keep them in business.

  4. with the kfc gone years ago and this today it leaves with two empty store fronts. I really hope that they get somehting decent in both of them.

  5. How awesome would it be if Bar on Buena could knock out a few walls and expand all the way down to the corner? I've seen Starbucks and Chinese restaurants do it elsewhere, so here's hoping this classy joint can do the same!

  6. @Patrick, I thought the same thing regarding BonB but there is a stairwell between them and the liquor store to the apartments upstairs...I don't know enough about construction to know if that is a dealbreaker or not....

  7. It's unfortunate that someone hasn't "read a negative word about Manhattan Liquors." Perhaps if that person would actually get off the computer and go outside and look around sometime, he would see that the place was a magnet for the scum of the earth, who continually harassed decent people at the corner bus stop, threw empty bottles and trash in neighboring lawns, drunkenly roamed aimlessly throughout the neigbhorhood, panhandled and terrified anyone they could. Good riddance to that closed liquor store.

  8. Fewer liquor stores, fewer payday loans, fewer cash for gold storefronts. It sounds like the right direction to me.

  9. I never had any problems at Manhattan Liquors. I went there for a while, but eventually GNS (Broadway and Belle Plaine) started stocking Guinness 8-packs (and is closer). Walk a couple blocks south to GNS and you'll have a generally better experience.

  10. Sad to see any business in "uptown" close.
This particular area is heaven-on-earth compared to a few blocks north (ah....Wilson and B'way).

  11. I wish BoB would take over the space too but have always been aware that there is a staircase between the two retail spaces. Any additional food option would be great, and I think we could support a good coffeehouse in the middle of BP.

  12. Buena Boy, you do have a great coffee house in Buena Park... at the corner of Clarendon and Gordon Terrace...Dollop... an independent coffee house that has been there for years.. support it so it does not close too..

  13. @John42: I'll trade you the drunk and the panhandler who terrifies you with his bad breath (you can even toss in a couple of empty bottles)...for our gangbangers, shootings, vandals, and teenaged rioters. I think I'd be getting the better deal.

  14. Didn't realize the staircase was there. I'm usually either running late for church at St. Mary's or walking into the BoB. Either way, I'm pretty focused and just didn't notice the stairway.
Now I'm thinking though... is it an important stairway? Could we donate a rope ladder to the upstairs denizens? Let's think outside the box on this one.

  15. Liquor Stores hardly ever close,
it wasnt closed due to poor sales.
In neighborhoods Liquor Stores are always the oldest businesses, so it mustve been a decision by the landlord.

  16. Finally. For weeks they didn't get any new alcohol so the selection was getting pretty slim. I asked them if they were closing and the guy said something about moving, but he didn't know where.

GNS has a better selection and prices from what I've seen though. And the employees don't smoke in the store...

  17. @Americanlt

A bakery or pet shop? These are the two businesses that come first to your mind? You must lead an exciting life. Say hello to the cat(s?) for me.

  18. Thanks, Jon, for the reminder about Dollop. It is *very* good indeed. I think we can support even more, and it would be great to build up a little restaurant row in the middle of the 'hood (like we have around the Sheridan El stop).
