I Think That I Shall Never See....

A reader writes:  "A couple weeks ago, the tree people from the city came through our neighborhood and left trees.  We asked them for a new tree to replace the one on the parkway in front of our place, which has been dead for years, but they said they could only plant trees, not remove them.  Well, apparently they couldn't even plant trees!  There are several up and down our block, lying on their sides on the parkway, like the one above.  The roots are drying out and the leaves have all turned brown.  Why bother delivering trees if they can't be bothered to plant them?  How much money has our bankrupt city wasted by delivering trees and letting them die on the parkway?  What a waste!  P.S. The trees I've seen like this have been in Truman Square, but I wonder if it's going on all over the city."

  1. This happened in our area. The tree was left out for at least 2 days until they finally came and planted it...and in the process they completely ripped up the brick sidewalk in front of the building...very disappointing

  2. Consider your self lucky! A tree died on our Malden parkway a few years ago, and no replacement ever materialized. (planted, or otherwise)

  3. Am I going out on a limb by suggesting you plant the tree yourself?

  4. Trees with the root ball like that weigh 300-400 pounds. Then there's digging a three foot deep hole in the parkway (dirt weighs 80-100 pounds per cubic foot), taking care not to hit any sewer lines or buried electrical wires while you're digging. Anyone who tries to take it on had better carry a lot of insurance and have superhuman strength.

  5. Rob better call Julie first before digging.

  6. That tree has been there quite a while, 2-3 weeks. I didn't know if it was a for the Condos right there or a city thing. Btw Rob Ross- love the pun.

  7. Please call the alderman's office at 878-4646 immediately.

Those trees cost taxpayer's hundreds of $$$.

Speaking of dead trees, take a walk around Truman, especially on the east side buildings, and look at all the DEAD TREES that our Wilson Yard money paid for.

  8. Anyone can email me today if they want me to plant this tree. You bring the spade and some money, I'll bring muscle and a sunny disposition.

  9. Rob Ross...

It seems you're a 'handy man'?! Are you available to do a few handy man chores in my place & building?

  10. Depending on availability, sure, I guess. Why not? Email me.

  11. Tons of dead trees on Wilson too, the new ones that were planted, probably 10% of them are dead and need replaced... Alderman, can you please help?

  12. @jon, if you want the alderman's help, you need to ask him, not comment on UU. Call 311.

  13. It might help to give the root ball a soaking so it don't dry out too much.

Or $50 isn't a bad deal....I wonder how much the city pays in labor to plant a tree? 2 guys could knock it out in an hour or so.

  15. Perhaps even sooner if you call Julie. I hear she is an excellent Digger.
