Felons Found With Guns Now Face Automatic Jail Time

By Monique Garcia, Clout Street
Convicted felons found illegally carrying guns will now face automatic jail time under a measure Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law today.

The new law removes the option of probation for felons who are convicted of unlawful use or possession of a weapon, which will now result in two to 10 years behind bars. Jail time increases to three to 14 years for each additional violation or for felons who are caught with guns while on parole or supervised release. Continue Reading

  2. @Yo: Maybe they're hoping everyone will trade in their guns for toys around Christmas :)

  3. But first they have to actually CATCH the felons for the law to be effective:) BUT, it's a start.

  4. CATCHING them won't be the problem. These idiot armed felons are tripping all over each other out there. The problem will be actually getting the States Attorney to charge them and bring them to trial instead of cutting deals and tossing the gun charge in plea bargains.

  5. Why can't laws like these become effectively IMMEDIATELY? Chicago isn't exactly Pleasantville at the moment...

I found these 2 Anonymous comments on Second City Cop on a similar post about this same new law and found it interesting. Thought I'd pass them along:

Illinois passed a new seat belt law for back seat passengers. It was signed into law on June27th of this year I believe, and went into effect on July 1st of the same year. 4 days later!

But the new law for felons with an illegal gun will take 5 months to become enforceable?

    ONLY IN ILLINOIS!

Sorry but I have no faith in any new law meaning anything.

I mean we have laws on the books regarding illegal immigration and instead of taking them off the books if they are deemed wrong we just ignore them right?

Then there's this push to do the exact same thing with the laws regarding marijuana. If they don't make sense get them off the books but no we want to ignore and pick and choose at will who they will apply to.

We have laws on frauds and racketeering and yet investment bankers that blew up the global economy with their frauds -- we don't see a single banker at the top in cuffs being prosecuted. They issued liar loans, lied about asset values, lied on foreclosure documents submitted to the courts making a mockery of the entire process. The world knows it and yet it goes on untouched...why? A few low level cases were brought and we get the plea of we're not going to admit or deny anything...here...here's a few bucks in chump change now leave us alone and they go back to doing the same thing. Robo-signing, credit default swaps, the whole nine yards.

So no, I'm sorry. Just a lot of hoopla like we are actually working on a problem. When the jails get packed to the rafters with gun felons we'll let them out like we're letting out the pot smokers because the city can't afford to keep them in.

This diversion over here to keep you from looking at the illegal immigrants coming across the borders over there endorsed by the president and carrying their Fast and Furious weapons that the ATF gave them.

Come on over amigo the governor has a scholarship program for you -- and the president has an entrepreneurship program for you too.

  7. The biggest problem are the judges who let them out on bail.
