"The repairs and renovation project at Challenger Bark continues with a fresh coat of paint on the asphalt. We labored over many color choices and two emerged as the most popular: blue and terra cotta. So now we're asking the neighborhood, especially those who use The Bark, for their opinion. People can either leave their comments on Uptown Update or they can email us at challengerbark@yahoo.com. Thanks!

It is named after the Challenger Space Shuttle that exploded, killing brave astronauts.. I think blue, representing the sky, would be the most logical and respectful considering the name... just my thoughts..
ReplyDeletePer this previous discussion, Challenger Park was NOT named after the shuttle.

Cool history.. thanks for sharing! I stand corrected....
ReplyDeleteJust to set the record straight before this story goes in the wrong direction and gets carved in stone in history. Challenger Park was first and foremost named to commemorate the shuttle disaster. When this idea was brought up the neighbors then over time jokingly talked about the double meaning – how “challenging” it was to work with the alderman and city to realize this park and anticipated many challenges in the future esp. with Helen. It should also be know that this park didn’t need Cubs money. The community had all the donation commitments in place to build a park without the Cubs. There were many sources of financing ready including Morton Arboretum who was ready to donate the trees and help with planting and other necessary land preparation. We just couldn’t get the approval from the city to begin and couldn’t start without it because they owned the land.
ReplyDeleteI vote Lavender.
ReplyDeleteAlso a big big “THANKS” to all the neighbors who are working so hard to maintain and improve this park.
ReplyDeleteI know you’ve put in countless hours meeting, organizing and working for this park and our community.
You’re awesome!
BLUE!
ReplyDeleteThat's not lavender or blue...it's aqua marine and tan.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather see blue, though.
ReplyDeleteI think the teal is cheery and way more fun
ReplyDeleteLavender looks better.
ReplyDeleteSymbolism only goes so far.
Lavender (or red, or tan, or whatever it is) - I vote for the one that is NOT the blue LOL.
ReplyDeleteLavender blue, dilly dilly
ReplyDeleteThe teal blue is a 'cooler' temperature-wise color which I think would be better for the asphalt than the (somewhat-salmon-looking) lavender.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies. The "lavender" color is actually a subdued terra cotta sort of hue. I mislabeled the pics and lavender stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteThanks to everyone for your opinions and the history lesson! Both are greatly appreciated.
We hope to have the asphalt painted in the next couple of weeks and will keep you posted.

That second picture is "lavender?" I thought it was more of a terra cotta. I'm wondering if my computer graphics are waaaaay off or if all y'all are just colorblind!
ReplyDeleteIt should be a light color. Dark colors absorb heat which can irritate (sear) the dogs paws especially during the dog days of summer.
