Adult Literacy Tutors Needed

From Mercy Housing:

"Low literacy levels in Chicago are no joke, and too many adults in your very own community struggle with reading and writing. Changing the issue one person at a time - community by community, block by block - is the only way to make a difference. That's why we're asking you to step up and help make a change.

The Mercy Housing Lakefront Learning Program is in high need of one-on-one volunteer literacy tutors. Our adult learners' goals and levels vary greatly, but all remain at or below a 9th grade reading level. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 1 hour a week for 6 months working one-on-one, and must complete an application, interview, and pass a background/drug screen.

Days and times of tutoring sessions vary and are determined on a case-by-case basis. Weekday availability preferred. Some experience in teaching and/or tutoring preferred but not required. Volunteers must be sensitive and understanding to the needs of adult learners. We provide 12 hours of initial tutor training before you begin your sessions. For more information and to receive an application, contact Kelly Bradley at kbradley@mercyhousing.org or call (773)506-3480 ext. 109."

  1. I have volunteered to do this in the past and would again, but background/dug check? Too volunteer? Count me out.
