"Low literacy levels in Chicago are no joke, and too many adults in your very own community struggle with reading and writing. Changing the issue one person at a time - community by community, block by block - is the only way to make a difference. That's why we're asking you to step up and help make a change.
The Mercy Housing Lakefront Learning Program is in high need of one-on-one volunteer literacy tutors. Our adult learners' goals and levels vary greatly, but all remain at or below a 9th grade reading level. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 1 hour a week for 6 months working one-on-one, and must complete an application, interview, and pass a background/drug screen.
Days and times of tutoring sessions vary and are determined on a case-by-case basis. Weekday availability preferred. Some experience in teaching and/or tutoring preferred but not required. Volunteers must be sensitive and understanding to the needs of adult learners. We provide 12 hours of initial tutor training before you begin your sessions. I have volunteered to do this in the past and would again, but background/dug check? Too volunteer? Count me out.
