Shooting On Lawrence Near Sheridan

Several readers reported that at around 7:50 p.m. on Thursday evening, a man was shot in the lower back in the alley between the Lawrence House and J.J. Peppers. Neighbors reported hearing four gunshots. Police arrived quickly after the shooting, and were able to apprehend the shooter.

Thanks to the quick work of the Chicago Police for catching this suspect. Summer hasn't even arrived, and we are already experiencing too much violence in our community.

Would it be too unreasonable to wait for more information before slamming a particular property. Maybe the shooter or the shootee were connected to Lawrence House...maybe not?
Maybe a customer at JJ peppers....maybe not.
One thing we do know is this is a problem, let the police do the detective work, they have a suspect so we very well may know soon enough.
Does that sound fair or is it just me?

  6. Ok, so who's in charge of following this fellow's case and keeping the neighborhood updated on the date of his sentencing? It's absolutely vital that people show up at the sentencing! But if nobody tracks this case...

  7. "Does that sound fair or is it just me?"

Sure. It still needs to be razed.

  8. From what I see that hangs out in front of the lawrence Hotel and from some the mouths of the residents that live there say about this place, it is no wonder that crime around it is not much worse then what it is.

  9. @Littleton - LH has a ton of good residents. It also has dealers and buyers, who are encouraging the gang wars by making that corner profitable. It does need significant remanagement and improvement, hopefully to avoid having it razed.

  10. the LH will no longer be profitable to a private owner following "significant remanagement and improvement", it's not going to happen. It will remain as is, be boarded up a la somerset or be razed.

  11. Okay, Alek. There are ten comments on this shooting. In three of them, you say Lawrence House needs to be razed. We get it. Your opinion has been put noted.

  12. Maybe Alek is the screenname for one of the LH owners trying to get out of their investment? LOL

  14. I like the junejacks term,
Lawrence House can be rehabilitated I believe.

Why destroy it? Large buildings like that are being fixed up in Hyde Park, the same things NEEDS to happen in Uptown.

More Market rate housing and Luxury housing/hotel.

One of the major entertainment areas in the city shouldnt be also a large hub for low income housing.

Its called UPTOWN, Im guessing it was called Uptown because it was An UP area. Cool. Rich. Interesting. It had movie studios....

There is a place for low income housing in the city.
BUT low income housing cannot and shouldnt not dominate such a vital important part of the City. We also need tax income and money coming in from residents and visitors who shouldnt have to fear for their lives from constant shootings. And that tax money can help subsidize low income housing.

  15. As a former resident of LH, I can say it's a smaller but persistent contingent of residents that cause all the problems. By and large the building is full of helpless people who can't or won't speak on their behalf about all the nonsense going on. ONE and Ezra, other organizations are trying to help. A few residents formed a tenants association, of which I saw several founders abandon and move out of LH. It's a start.
However, the only solution is an extensive review of each and every resident, and evicting those who buy/sell drugs/stolen property. And then rehabbing the facility.

  16. Yep... I love that old building. I'd love to see it gutted and rehabbed. I hope that someday we can tell stories about how bad this corner used to be!
