Immediate Response from Alderman Cappleman Regarding Today's Gunfire

Uptown Update just received the following email from the Office of Alderman James Cappleman:

From: Alderman James Cappleman (info@james46.org)

NOTICE: Shots Fired on Leland near Winthrop, no one hit, two arrested

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, May 16, 2011

Shots Fired on Leland near Winthrop, no one hit, two arrested. This afternoon at approximately 3:40 p.m. there were shots fired on Leland near the corner of Winthrop. No one was hit. Police officers believe the incident was gang related; two people have been arrested. At this time, the 23rd Police District is deploying additional police resources to this area. Alderman Cappleman and Commander Boehmer are meeting tomorrow to discuss a plan of action to prevent gun violence in the area.

While it's very unfortunate for this gunfire to occur in the middle of an otherwise delightful first day of Alderman Cappleman's tenure, his immediate response to the community and plans to meet with 23rd District Commander Boehmer should be commended.

  2. Yay!! Even though the press release doesn't have breaking news or anything unknown to us, it's just great to have an acknowledgement that the alderman has ears to the ground, so to speak, and knows that the community is scared. Great leadership and an awesome follow up!

  3. Wow. Did he hear me? I said I was just kidding. Its your first day!

Now what's up with the skateboard park burning thing? Now THAT sounds wacky.

  4. Alderman... Violence... Response... It's such a foreign concept... it's hard to even put it all together. What a great idea!

  5. Thank you James for your fast response. Please keep us posted!

  6. It didn't take James 7 hours to do something many had pleaded Helen to do for years.

  7. That is what I call starting off on the right foot! Thank you!

  8. Flex that muscle James! I can only hope that what is proposed tomorrow with Commander Boehmer is HARSHNESS!! No leniency what so ever. Can we bring the Guardian Angels back? Can we use off-duty police officers? Can we bring in National Guard or post police snipers on rooftops? I don't care, I just want a SERIOUS show of force and authority to finally deal with these vermin.

  9. Finallly we have someone to represent the law abiding people of the ward. Not to mention the people who pay property taxes.

  10. So is the image of Speedy Gonzalez suppose to imply that he got the news out fast or that the gang bangers are latinos? Or a lil of both? Hmmmm????

  11. Uptownaction, why would the new Alderman show harshness towards Commander Boehmer? It is not her fault nor the fault of the Police that you are having problems in your neighborhood. How about placing the blame where it belongs. How about having a meeting with Anita Alverez and ask why it is so hard to get any kind of felony charge approved when the Police make an arrest. Why do they plea bargain it down so often? How about having a meeting with the Chief Judge and ask him why his judges tossso many cases or why they release repeat offenders? Oh, btw, how is that new law in which the age was raised from 17-18 to charge an teenager with a crime because those that sponsored the law felt that it was unjust towards the little darlings that go out and pillage and plunder in various communities day after day? What no nmeeting with those that advocated for that law. Some of those advocates come right from your neighborhood. How about a "harsh" meeting with them?

  12. I think the discussion should shift from the speed of the responses to the fact that this happened across the street from a school while children were present! Enough of the finger pointing. Let's work with Alderman Cappleman to stop this violence in our ward!

  13. Dont you love how people would rather discuss a cartoon character rather than a shooting in front of children? Really?????????? Thanks Jim! lets hope these gangs get whats coming to them real soon.

  14. I wish the new Alderman well and hope he can cool things down around here when it comes to gangs. Chicago has many gangs and they been in many neighborhoods for years so I hope something can be done to get them out of here in shorter time. Seems once they get a foothold even the CPD cannot move them out fast enough. Lets hope something can be done.

  15. I must have missed where the shooters were ID'd as latino.

    Hm.

And, Larry - I doubt that anyone denies that the setting for this latest display of obnoxious douchebaggery was anything less than abhorrent. It's just that having an alderman in the 46th so quickly address that it actually happened, and not downplay it out of hand took many by surprise.

We're all used to having armed rats running amok proving their idiotic disregard for the community - we're not used to having an alderman who demonstrates any level of concern so quickly. It's going to take a little getting used to.

  16. God, this is so sad! We are so starved for information from our alderman, we cheer a release of any information. I say let's see what comes out of the meeting with Boehmer. Maybe is we clap our hands when any aldermanic communication occurs, cheer for a policy/strategy and give a standing ovation for results. Yup, thank you Helen for skewing our reference points.

  18. Captain Picard, what skateboard park burning thing? I'm intrigued...

  19. @Chitown He was referring to my comment on the shooting thread. I heard over the police scanner that there was a 16 y/o white Male threatening to burn down the skate park at LSD and Wilson. Which makes no sense since it's a concrete park.

  20. Hmmm. Although I hope it isn't who I think it is, I have a feeling I know that kid. A certain young man, who I would assume to be about 16, and is white, has a history of this type of thing. Although it is impossible to burn down a concrete park, he has set some leaf and rubbish piles on fire in the park before, much to our dismay. I wish I knew more details, like who was a making this threat too and why? It probably isn't funny, because the kid is troubled, but I am chuckling a bit thinking about it.

  21. I am wondering if having Mayor Emanuel living at Paulina and Wilson will be helpful for Uptown. I mean, won't he have to drive through it every day to get to City Hall? Will he stop at the McDonalds for a cup of coffee on his way and see the state of the corner of Wilson and Sheridan? I really hope that his daily exposure to the streets of Uptown both inspire and concern him enough to take positive action and to be outspoken about our great community.

Maybe we should put up signs along his route?

  22. @Cap Picard:

It's hard to burn down concrete.

As for Ald. Cappleman's response, thank you! It's great knowing that we don't have a tone-deaf, unresponsive city representative anymore.
