Today's the very last City Council meeting for outgoing Ald. Helen Shiller and outgoing Mayor Richard Daley, so the longtime frenemies have nothing to gain by bashing each other.  In an article in Gay Chicago, they talk about their past battles and how It Just All Worked Out In The End.
Mayor Richard M. Daley stopped at the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Lake View April 29, where he and 46th Ward Ald. Helen Shiller, like the mayor also retiring after more than two decades in office, talked about the many projects they'd seen to fruition but also reflected on their disagreements and how they learned to work together.
Read Daley, Shiller: Common purpose was more important than differences here.

  1. When Mayor Daley was elected in 1989 he wasn't at that bar, but over time he moved closer to that bar. At a certain point, if you realized where we said the bar should be, he met that bar. At that point I said if that's the case, then I need to see if we can do better. So I appreciate that there are a lot of different things that on principle we agree on.

It'll be her sanctimonious blatherings that I'll miss the most.
