"Cheap Gas" Is A Relative Term...

... but Citgo (formerly "Gas City") at Clark and Belle Plaine somehow has prices 15 to 35 cents a gallon cheaper than other places in Uptown.

Citgo says it's now open 24 hours a day, whereas Gas City closed by midnight.  Just an FYI.

  1. Citgo is way cheaper. There is one in Indiana with prices of $3.99 per gallon.

  2. Not an option for most, to venture on down to Indiana for gas. That said, anything outside the city limits is a bargain!

  3. Actually, it is not that bad of a drive. If you take US 41 you can scope out the south side, which is actually quite interesting. Read a little about the history, drive past Jackson Park Harbor, through the industrial hoods. When you get into Indiana, make sure you stay on US 12 (not 20). The next thing you know, you are in Dunes National Lakeshore. Drive a little further, you are in the Pines.... drive a little further... and it is Red Arrow Highway and antique shops....

  4. Driving from the north side to Indiana for gas is kind of...pointless. It's 60+ miles round trip...which is two gallons (or more) in some cars. If the price difference is 40-50 cents a gallon, you're basically burning $8 (if gas is $3.99 gal) to get there and back. If I were to completely fill my 12 gallon tank, the difference between north side and Indiana prices would be about $6. So...

  5. Indiana is not only cheaper in gas but also in taxes that Illinois has raised and is about to raise again. If I was not already retired I be long gone from this state for sure.

  6. actually wiseguy, i own a weekend house in NWIN, and the taxes there overall are no lower than IL. some taxes are a smidge higher here, some are higher there. in the end it about balances out even.

my property tax bill there is (percentage-wise) substantially higher than my bill in chicago, even if you remove all the discount subsidies both entities offer (homeowner exemptions, etc)

captain picard is right, its a nice drive along the lakefront & full of history. but also, nobody is going to save any $$ driving to IN unless you live close to the border already.

  7. Don't most big corporations have "no compete" policies regarding their local franchises? There's a Citgo at Irving and Clark, only a few blocks away from here. I can't imagine that "corporate" is very happy with this situation and something's gotta give soon!

  9. I would not be surprised if the all night lighting and possibility of frequent activity at the gas station becomes a nuisance to the nearby condo owners.

  11. just to let you know CITGO gas is horrible... BP (British Petroleum)and Shell have the best gas! Although it might be more expensive it saves you money cause it stays in your car longer... so even is bp is more expensive use it it is worth it
