"here's to a safer store" indeed, cheers to that. Especially since this mini strip mall seems to be a hotbed for a lot of unsavory stuff. (just an observation on my part).
I'm more grateful than ever for my 'lil mall' at Montrose and Clark. (to my knowledge, there's never been a shooting here)
So it seems like they pissed off enough people to have the gauntlet thrown at them. I'm in the camp of "No way the city comes in randomly and does an inspection like this without another reason"
So now the owners have to invest considerable amounts of money into the property. Maybe they'll clean up the outside area as well.
Ever think the locked door is to stop people from comming in from the alley? Garbage was in front of the doors waiting for the garbage pickup to go out from clean-up after the car drove thru? Moveable shelving blocking electric panel for storage? Venting thru drop ceiling passed opening inspection? Just saying......
To: Stark Mad... of course there has been a shooting there. There was this incident... http://www.uptownupdate.com/2010/07/crime-site-on-montrose-clark.html
and then I remember last summer hearing shots, turning on my police scanner app, and hearing that there was a shooting in front of the 7-11, but I can't find a post on that.
Maybe this store and others in Uptown can stop the selling of cold beer? They could still sell it warm. I think it would help with the public drinking that the locals do around this area?
The strip mall at Clark/Montrose -- which does not have a drug-dealing drive-through business (like the Magnolia/Wilson strip mall); or begging, loitering, and public drinking (like the Sheridan/Lawrence strip mall); or aggressive panhandling and public urination (like the Wilson/Broadway strip mall) -- is owned by the Rayan family, who live and own multiple properties in the area.
The Rayans own, run and staff businesses on three of the four corners at Wilson/Clark, the liquor store at Clark/Foster, and probably more that I'm not aware of. All properties that you rarely hear about anything illegal happening on or chronic complaints about.
Kind of startling to see the difference in the property when it has an on-scene owner who cares about being a good neighbor.
Holy crap this is a huge deal. The commissioner does not usually use the extreme remedy of using his own police power often. And really, these are nickel and dime violations that are easily remedied. Interesting.
I honestly have had good experiences with this store. They've most recently posted signs against loitering or entering for non-customers, the staff has always been polite and helpful, and they by no means only sell cheap alcohol - nor is the better beer (goose island, delierium tremons, etc) vastly overpriced. As for the loitering, because of the bus stop right by the entrance, it is probably very hard to try to police it.
Setting up a camera in the alley out back would help (some deals happen back there - people loitering will duck back for the deal), but I generally consider them good neighbors, much more so than former S&L, now S, which has always seemed to have a greatler loitering issue. ALso, the lights on S Pantry looks like they are trying to give passing drivers a seizure.
What is the policy regarding loitering around mailboxes or just hanging over them and drinking which happens at Lawrence and Sheridan? Also, be careful what you wish for, as stated in other posts, the crime moves elsewhere and we need to anticipate where the next problem spot will be.
Oh my goodness, Michele -- I know who you're talking about! Your drinker man at the mailbox on Sheridan & Lawrence. He is awful. He pees in the alley and deals drugs from that mailbox as well. Just keep calling 911 on him. He lives at REST (I believe) and drinks and deals all day at the mailbox.
Folks, remember, Shiller had 24 years to screw up completely and thoroughly this ward... give Cappleman some time to dig through the piles of elephant crap that he has to deal with... this ward is going to take some time to fix..just putting it out there so folks are realistic... it aint gonna get done in a week or a month or even a year all that needs done..
I know just the guy to have an "accident" at S&L. could always use the elderly man who walks in between lanes of traffic at Broadway and Lawrence begging as an excuse. that guy is gonna get killed or cause an accident. the police often relocate him west on Lawrence by Lincoln Square. I believe I she said mailbox gentleman at CAPS meetings lecturing about his rights to hang out on the street. I've called the 911 so many times, I think they know me by name. I have two bigs dogs and just like to walk up to the mailbox with them to make him move. I love when he has the "boom box " out in summer. classic
Speaking of crap at this shopping center, I was pretty attentive but every time I washed my clothes at the laundromat there, somehow at least one major item went missing, usually a polo shirt. Hmm...
I like your pro-active approach to scattering the "bugs". If your in need of some neighborly assistance with your efforts, name a time to meet at Lawrence/Sheridan and let's have fun!
UptownAction: perhaps we should talk and plan a "pet Parade and mom/baby stroller brigade one afternoon, with our soon to be Aldermans ok of course. Don't know work schedules, but our mailbox offender likes the midmorning/early afternoon. Can't wait!

The first citation indicates that employees were stealing.
ReplyDelete"...causing carbon monoxide to leakage at the store area"
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is why the intelligence level of the gangbangers near the area is so low :)

ReplyDeleteAmericanLT - they'll drink the half pint vodka bottles and will drink beer warm too...
ReplyDeleteOk folks, here is a real solution for someone that lives in that Precinct.. vote it dry.. see below on how wonderfully succesful that can be..

What a difference responsible ownership makes.

I have seen people drinking warm beer lots of times, it wouldn't stop them to not sell it cold

ReplyDeleteHow the he'll do we get them into S&L Pantry?

ReplyDeleteMichelle - A phone call to 311 after the new alderman is sworn in might do the trick. That or ... driving your car "accidently" through a window.
ReplyDeleteAlso the new alderman needs to address the panhandling at the Lawrence Red Line.
ReplyDeleteOk, who's got a lemon they can drive through the front of S Pantry? Maybe that will get the inspections rolling over there!

ReplyDeleteWe need a Chuck Norris or Charles Bronson around here...I'll take Michael Douglas "In Falling Down".
ReplyDeleteGood work Michele w/ the mailbox drug dealer and public drinker. Positive loitering would generally send him home early...

ReplyDeleteMichele and UptownAction - I'm in too! And I'll bring my dog :)
ReplyDeletea little birdie told me that the fire violations really puts the city on edge.
