Shots Fired In Front Of Truman This Afternoon

We are hearing from two readers that shots were fired in front of Truman College at 1:30 this afternoon by two men in hoodies and jeans.  Truman security saw and ID'd the shooters, both known P Stones, and are meeting with CPD to identify them.  There was a foot chase on Sunnyside and through the alley on Malden.  No further word.  Please add to the comments if you have more information.

Update:  Now we're hearing there's a gang fight at 1050 W Wilson (around Kenmore) at 3:15.  Calls are going out on the scanner for additional cars.

  1. I was literally right there about the same time. I saw 6 guys in hoodies sitting along the retaining wall of the building there. Ironically, I was going there to cast my early vote.

  2. These guys give hoodies a bad name.

  3. Where's Edward G Robinson in "Bullets or Ballots" when we need him.

Bogart would be handy to have around too.

  4. Saw a bunch of squads on Kenmore and Wilson and they have the intersection blocked off. Not sure if this is related to the shooting earlier at Truman.

  5. I figured something was going on. Cops were speeding up and down the 4400 block of Malden. Also, most Sunnyside Mall neighbors might recognize the guy with the just-above-the-shoulder length dreadlocks and ill-fitting clothes. I saw him walking down Malden toward 4425 around this time. It has been a while since I have seen him but it is quite coincidental that he was in the area around the time of the shooting. I also saw a guy in dressed in black who looked to be of latino descent running down Malden. He clearly was not out for a leisurely afternoon jog.

  6. Lets hope our future Alderman is aware of this latest gang and shots fired problem in our Uptown streets. I would hope they also have good courses of action that our last leader did not have to address these everyday occurences to make our neighborhood safe and healthy for all the residents that live here.

  7. i hope they put these thugs in jail for a long time. No freaking probation or that fact that they are misunderstood. Only when we put these guys away for years will they think twice about doing something.

  8. I must have missed this by a few minutes. I was early voting. When you start missing multiple episodes by a few minutes, certainly makes you wonder which one you won't miss. I don't even drive the kids that way any longer. I go out of my way to avoid those intersections. I would not want to get caught up in gang fight at a stop with little kids in the car.

  9. This must the reason for the CPD helicopter flying over the neighbor this afternoon.

  10. It's not surprising since the
P Stones have a very busy drug business in front of Truman. I see them out there every time I walk by with my dogs.

  11. I've been noticing increased gang graffiti lately in spots that I had rarely seen it - Hutchinson near Clarendon, etc. I guess this is the thugs' warning sign. I too was planning to early vote today, but am glad I didn't. I hope no one person was hurt and the thugs are caught.

  12. Once the election is over, can the countdown ticker on Uptown Update be modified to display 'days-hrs-min-sec' "OF PEACE WITHOUT GUNFIRE IN UPTOWN"? -or- "OF TRANQUILITY" -or- ????

  13. I saw someone who looked like Omari (see http://www.uptownupdate.com/2011/01/cpds-operation-sugar-magnolia-hits.html) on the street. I wonder if they're back in the neighborhood.

  15. @sam45man: I am no super sleuth, so I do not promise this is accurate, but I just ran a search of the inmate locators for cook county jail, and IDOC. According to their websites, the only of the four morons pictured in the article that is still in jail is Roy Orr. None of the other three appear to be in the correctional system. Glad they were off the streets for so long.

  16. How many mailboxes, car doors and "condo" windows did they shatter this time? Inquiring minds want to know.

  17. Does it make me to much of a film buff to want to insert a certain quote by Colonel Kurtz? Is anyone a fan of militias, mobs, neighborhood patrol groups? It's us against them and they are/have been winning a LONG time..

This summer will trump last summer by far I am forecasting. The police are great responders, hope that makes you all feel safe.

The Guardian Angels will not respond to any communications from Uptown residents (likely due to Shiller)so who's got some ideas? What are WE going to do about this before the warm weather gets here and this is happening daily?

I'm suggesting citizen patrol groups just like the Guardian Angles but by the people of Uptown. We can test our new alderman's commitment to fighting crime and invite him/her out as well. We can arrange meetings with police and coordinate our efforts. We can be in communication with foot and bike patrol units to tighten the noose on the gangs operating areas. We can flood poor building management offices with calls demanding action. The list can go on and on once more than just one of us is willing to get up and do something.

  19. Im doing my part by picking up litter. Litter and crime go hand in hand.

Sign me up! I just applied for my Illinois Firearm Ownwers ID card. Now all I have to do is take lessons! Oh wait... maybe some of the boys in the hood can teach me how to use a weapon.

  21. Well, I guess the militia/citizen patrol idea is a good one, but note that the P Stones are, historically, rivals of most sets which align themselves with the Folks nation. Could we instead just reach out to some Folks sets, see if we can form an alliance of some sort, in order to combat the P Stones?

  22. I wouldn't count on any help from the Truman security...from my recent experience, the guards I saw were both lazy and rude. The other night when I tried to cut through there on my way to Montrose, a guard treated me like I was retarded when I asked if I could simply cut through. At the time, he was sitting down watching TV. My apologies to those of you who know polite/competent Truman staff.

I doubt most security staff are trained to handle gang activity.

Good for you, my Marine buddy is trying to get me to get a license as well. The undesirables will have one less safe home to break into for an easy smash and grab if you ever purchase your firearm.

Here's another reason why citizen patrol groups would be an EXCELLENT idea in Uptown..

    http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/4264350-418/chicago-first-city-with-citizens-sending-photos-videos-to-911.html

To avoid intimidation, there are numerous legal self-defense items available out there. We need to get some steam behind this idea, who's all interested?

  24. The peace and quiet was just too good to be true, wasn't it? I hate to admit it but I really was wondering how long it would take for Magnolia Medusa to grow another ugly head after Sugar Magnolia cut off the one in January 2011. @oldmanuptown and @sam45man, I too did an inmate search and sad to say, you both seem to be absolutely right. With the exception of Roy Orr and daytime murderer, Brayant Rodgers, all of the "upstanding citizens" wrangled up in Sugar Magnolia have apparently been released to mingle once again with us "unsuspecting citizens." And, it just burns my damn soul!! I am soooo tired of loving my Uptown neighborhood but being too afraid to go outside in it. I knew something was going on or already had gone down when I saw that little crowd on the corner of Magnolia and Wilson congregating today. This is why I immediately checked Uptown Update when I got home. And lo and behold, I was right! I guess our little piece of peace was/is just too darn much to ask for from the Chicago Neighborhood Gods. Though one can always hope, right?
