Storm Stuff

  • Have any side streets been plowed? Please post the block if yours has.
  • If you're in the 48th Ward, you may find this latest email blast from Ald. Smith's office helpful:

"We have been getting many calls and e-mails about snow removal from alleys. As a policy, the City does not plow alleys.  The problem is that plowing will pile snow up against garages and parking lot driveways, making it even more difficult for people to get their cars out.  To try to help residents, Streets and Sanitation is running big trucks down the alleys to establish ruts, but this may not be enough.

Now would be a good time for block "snow removal parties".  We're suggesting that neighbors organize shoveling parties for this afternoon and evening starting at 4:00 or 6:30. Those of you who can't shovel, can bring coffee or cocoa (with or without brandy) and provide moral support. Contact your block club or e-mail doug@masmith48.org with your address so we can help connect you to your neighbors.  Please do not call our office as the phone lines are flooded, and there will a delay in answering your call.

On another note, once main streets have been plowed curb-to-curb, the parking ban is lifted, and you can again park on main thoroughfares.

To get the latest information on the progress of the clean-up, go to the City's storm alert web page. This link also includes information on where to retrieve cars that were towed from Lake Shore Drive."
  • From Ald. Schulter (47th Ward):
"The Department of Streets and Sanitation crews in the 47th Ward are currently working on the vital and side streets. This work will continue through the day and evening. Due to the depth of the snow and ice, streets will require several treatments. They are using all available equipment and working around the clock to have all the side streets cleared as soon as possible.

If anybody is parked next to a school, we are requesting that you move your car to allow crews to clear the curbs in preparation for school tomorrow.

We understand that some residents are concerned about snow removal from alleys. As policy, the City does not plow alleys. Plowing alleys causes snow to be pressed up against garages and parking lot entrances making it harder for residents to get out. We recommend that residents work with their neighbors to clear alleys."."

  1. A plow attempted the 4600-4700 block of Malden last night at 12:00 and got stuck. It was really struggling from what I could see behind it. It "rocked" back and forth about 20 times before finally gaining a little traction, but was not able to effectively move all the snow.

These guys have a tough job. I am trying not to be too hard on the city on this one. They can't snap their fingers and make this all go away tomorrow.

Also, I know a private contractor who was responsible for one of the lots in the middle of 4700 Magnolia dropped his plow and ran it from mid block to Lawrence. That alley is now passable, but be careful because there are HUGE piles throughout the course.

4700 Magnolia was in bad shape as of 8AM...

  3. The 4600 block on North Kenmore has, just enough for cars to be able to get through. There are a lot of do-it-your-selfers on this block to supplement the remmoval.

  4. Our street was done by a private contractor (I believe) who proceeded to pile all the snow on top of the fire hydrant up the block. Not really sure what they were thinking. Is that a 911 call? I don't know who hired the contractor.

  5. This is awful-garbage trucks can not get thru-this means piled up garbage. Not their fault. What a mess.

  6. The 900 block of Eastwood was plowed and there were 3 foot snow drifts all over. I don't know how they did it, although the cars that are parked there are now piled in. The residents of the 900 block of both Eastwood and Leland did the alley that we share. There were several 4 foot snow drifts that we took down with snow blowers and shovels.

  8. The 4600 blk of N. Racine was plowed yesterday. A large City plow truck barely got thru, though. Cars can pass carefully on the street.

  10. 4600 blocks of Kenmore and Winthrop just got cleared about an hour ago. The truck got stuck in front of my house, which wasn't encouraging. Seeing all the people driving down the street now is funny -- they all have big smiles on their faces and I bet they don't even realize it.

  11. To the "private contractor" who plowed the 4700 alley of Malden: You could have finished the whole alley instead of stopping and dumping your whole snow load in front of MY garage. Now I can't get out.

  12. my block (Gunnison between Marine Dr. and Sheridan) was plowed last night. someone said they did our street sooner than some others because Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital is at the end of the block. not sure if that's true. anyone who dug out their cars prior to then got completely plowed in and had to start all over.

  14. Seriously! I live at the 4500 Block of Malden and our street still has not been plowed! Are they going to plow this or just wait for it to melt away??

  17. There are 2 bobcats and 1 GIANT bulldozer (the biggest I've ever seen) removing snow from Cullom. The giant bulldozer is so big it can't fit down the street so it has to operate in the intersection at Broadway, basically closing it down. The 2 smaller cats are hauling the snow down the street and the giant dozer is loading it into huge trucks and taking it away! It's great to see the snow getting removed even though Broadway is essentially shut down but I think we're going to have to learn to live with that for the next few days or weeks until the city can dig out every street and then all the parking lanes along the streets like Broadway and opening up all the outer lanes on LSD, etc... At least we're seeing progress! It's gotta be tough for the city but those drivers are doing their best and I appreciate it!
The South side of Hazel actually has been 95% shovelled as well (which is a first because there are always 3-5 who almost never do).
