As in past years, the Center for Economic Progress will be offering free tax and financial services to families earning less than $50K in 2010 and individuals who earned less than $25K in 2010.Help is available in 30 communities, including ours. The Uptown location is Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson, and help is available from January 22 thru April 18. Hours are Monday thru Thursday: 5:30pm - 8pm, and Saturday 10am - 1pm. In addition to tax help, they also offer help with checking and savings accounts; prepaid debit cards; and financial aid assistance.

I volunteer for LadderUp and they also offer free tax services in Uptown at the McCormick Boys and Girls Club. They are open most Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:30am.

Someone should dress up as the Statue of Liberty and stand on the corner of Wilson and Broadway to let people know about this option -- and that the other Statue of Liberty's services are a predatory rip-off.
