And Just To Add To The Excitement...

... a very reliable source tells us:  "7-10 Gunshots, Magnolia/ Sunnyside @ 8:40pm."

Several other readers confirm, and one adds from his phone:  "Near Magnolia and Sunnyside. Around 8:45 pm. Lots of people running around. Sad to see Truman students trying to run with their 40 lbs bookbags to get out of the line of fire."

  1. FYI - despite popular belief, FALL, not summer, is statistically the most violent time of the year for gang violence. last *shot* before winter?

  3. Raven there were over 5 shots. First 2, then more spaced out. Firing west down Sunnyside. Loud. Sounded like the same 44 that killed Mr. Carter.

Either way, another unacceptable shooting in Sheridan Park.

  4. Yep.

After calling 911, I emailed UU.
I looked out the window, and sure enough, lots of people looking out their windows as well.

    I counted 4-5 shots.

The sick thing is, it's just so common-place. I ran to the back door, and there were kids playing in the alley per usual, as this was going on.

I know I have to 'move on', but when this kind of thing happens I always think to myself that this kind of crap doesn't happen 'up' near where our Alderman lives....

  5. I was out around 4pm and saw tons of cops everywhere... on bikes, and in marked and unmarked cars. I imagine they figured on some retaliation, or at least an unsettled situation, after the street violence this afternoon. All evening long, I've been seeing police cars patrolling my street, which is generally fairly quiet. Sad they have to be here, but I feel much better with their presence.

  6. Couldn't make the 2311 Beat meeting. Any comments on the meeting?

  7. I don't know if this is related but I saw two guys on bikes, fitting the white t-shirt thug description, getting arrested @10:30pm last night on the corner of Montrose & Racine. I was surprised to see 6-7 CPD cars aprehending these guys.

  8. @CLady:

Much smaller (normal size) crowd compared to after the murder on Magnolia this summer. Key bit of info was that that the police met with the new owner of the strip mall and positive things are happening. Someone posted a more detailed recap at the GWNA facebook page here:

The police said it was one of the most positive meetings they've ever had with a landlord. Also, it sounded like they were able to get the food mart to take some of the stuff out of their window so it'd be easier for people see in and, hopefully, shed more light on who is in there. Other than that, mostly just the classic stuff that we deal with regularly...

  10. I've lived in the Sunnyside and Beacon area for 6 years and it seems like the violence is getting closer and closer. Is the case or have I been living under a rock? Last night was the first time that I've ever heard gunfire, that I am aware of.

  11. Just had 6 cameras installed to monitor alley, front yard, gate, etc. I am afraid the activity is moving farther west. That being said, I am vested in this neighborhood and will not tolerate the behavior of the thugs. I walk throughthe neighborhood with my dogs and my children. I believe that if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything. i wish the Bronsons and Norris characters existed. We are dealing with punks with guns. Shameful as it may sound I wish we could have snipper units to fire back. Criminals might think. These are domestic terrorists. As far as alderman support, I have a nicely paved new street and my trash has been picked up regularly. Being Alderman is more than crime and isolated qualities. It would be ideal to wish for an alderman to be in control with the other candidates and the qualities they posses to work together on a commitee to make our ward work. Pie in the sky

  12. Bradley - Glad to see you and your partner did not let the chaos in the neighborhood spoil your enjoyment.

If the momentum is ever going to move the other way (and it can) the good people need to turn on their lights, come out of their homes, and support local businesses that promote a viable community.

For a good show, however, I suggest the "after school" video from Leland and Sheridan posted on UU the other day....
