And Then There Were Two...

The Chicago City Council's two longest-serving women both will step down at the end of their terms. Lakefront Alds. Helen Shiller, 46th, and Mary Ann Smith, 48th, each said today that they will not be on the February ballot for re-election.

Shiller, who was first elected in 1987, said she has accomplished what she set out to in her North Side ward.

Smith confirmed that she won't seek re-election in her North Side ward and told the Tribune she would explain why later today.

  1. I love it when you post Mary Ann's high school picture.

  2. Wow...

Well, let's hope the new alderman of the 46th and 48th wards can work together and make positive things happen. I don't think Smith found Shiller particularly easy to work with (big surprise). There is no reason it should be so obvious that you are entering a different ward, just by walking across the street (i.e. crossing Leland going north on Broadway).

  3. Rep. Harry Osterman is the favorite in 48, but can he deal with the uptown part of the ward

  4. I love Mary Ann Smith. The thump she dropped down on the CTA buildings at Winthrop and Winona was wonderful.

But I'm not sorry to see some of her staff go. I find them difficult and condescending.

Let's hope the two new aldermen can work together, esp in the gerrymandered cluster f of violence and neglect that is the Winmore-Argyle strip.

A good bet is that Mary Ann will "retire" and Harry will take the seat before the election.

    It's tradition in that ward.

  8. I have been visiting Uptown Update since early spring. I must say that because of you, the real citizen / resident / neighbor, your participation and cooperation with one another caused the ouster of these useless politicians. Do not let up now. It is your neighborhood. There is no reason in the world that singles, married, retired, and seniors should not be able to live out their days and enjoy the city life in peace and safety. Demand service that you pay for. Support and protect your police officers and you individually, and as a whole, will reap the rewards. I am excited for you and excited for Uptown. It has been a long time coming.
    Congrats!

  9. "Shiller, who was first elected in 1987, said she has accomplished what she set out to in her North Side ward."

Indeed. Most Chicago politicians aspire to epic levels of waste and corruption. Congratulations, Helen.

  10. SORRY FOR THE CAPS
I'M GLAS MAS IS NOT RUNNING. SHE HASN'T CARED ABOUT THE FAR END OF HER WARD IN A VERY LONG TIME. I'M SURE HARRY WILL RUN AND I'M SIGNED UP TO HELP WITH HIS CAMPAIGN. HE'S A GOOD GUY AND CARES ABOUT THE WHOLE WARD. SHILLER & MAS DECIDED WHERE TO PUT THEIR EFFORTS AND FORGOT ABOUT THE OTHER TAX PAYING, LAW ABIDING HARD WORKING VOTERS IN THE REST OF THEIR WARDS. ALTHOUGH I MUST SAY, MAS DID A FAR BETTER JOB THAN SHILLER. HARRY AT LEAST LISTENS TO THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE.

  11. The question I have is: how many years will it take to undo the Shiller damage? She's had years to stock the 46th with substance abusers, the mentally ill, and her petty criminal friends (hey - they just need a second/third/forth chance).
