Positive Loitering Tonight, 7-8 PM Sheridan & Leland

Please come out tonight and join your neighbors for an evening of Positive Loitering 7-8 PM at the corner of Leland and Sheridan. The event is once again being sponsored by the Uptown Chicago Commission and all are encouraged to attend. Bring a friend, bring a dog, bring a friends dog! Treats for your canine companions have been generously donated by our friends at Soggy Paws.

Families, pets and residents who want to demonstrate that the streets belong to law abiding neighbors, not gangs, are asked to come out and enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

Our Police Officers are aware of our efforts and encourage neighbor's participation.

  1. Why is this only an hour long? I'm curious.

  2. Moosh, let me make sure I have this right. You're asking why volunteers who have worked all day are willing to just do this for an hour rather than a couple of hours? I wonder if you'll be there tonight?

  5. It was just pointed out to me that there have been special positive loitering events after violent crimes in various parts of Uptown along Wilson and Sheridan, but we actually have a murder at a park, and no positive loitering there?

    That's a little disappointing.

  6. just some guy... why don't you try organizing it with your neighbors? Just get a few folks together, tell the cops where you'll be, and be there. That's what positive loitering is.

It will save you from further disappointment that volunteers aren't doing what you want them to, where you want them to be.

  7. Just Some Guy - Instead of complaining on why get off your A#@ and do it yourself!

Sorry but I am sick of the attitude of people expecting the handouts, I have been active at these events almost every Friday since we started last year, As a matter of fact we had a great turnout last night where the "locals" scattered once we arrived. Instead of complaining do something, organize one for that area, don't expect others to do it for you!

  9. Just my humble opinion...

To be fair, I do see just some guy's point. There's no need to go and get angry at him aside from his somewhat crass delivery of his message. The reason I personally don't attend the positive loitering is because of the location. I know we had violence there last summer, but the violence is now happening elsewhere and the positive loitering hasn't followed.

Having it in front of the Parvenu is also kind of a sign of "us vs. them" -- rich vs. poor, etc. There's a huge socio-economic divide going on in our neighborhood (which ends of being a racial divide too), and I would love to see this problem tackled head on.

I'm not dissing the volunteers, as I really think their hearts are in the right place. But, I think with some redirection they could be much more effective.

  10. Uptown Guy - I am not sure you understand, no violence on that corner (not sure about that one!!) but walk one block in my shoes (literally on a Friday night) up to the SL Pantry and see what goes on. It is not all about violence, it is making a presence to discourage the "activities" that go on between Lawrence and Wilson on Sheridan Rd.

I agree that more people need to get involved and I am glad that you and some guy have volunteered to lead the charge in that area!! LESS TALK MORE ACTION!!!

  11. The group concentrated their efforts at the corner of Lawrence & Sheridan. This is a group of residents taking some positive steps to address crime on their block.

However, please feel free to organize positive loitering anywhere you wish. No one is stopping anyone from doing so.
