Two Males Shot In 4500 Block Of Magnolia

Our inbox is flooded:
"Someone was just shot in the chest in front of 4526 N. Magnolia, around 4:35 pm. I heard shots and called 911 without looking, and when I did look, someone was on the curb bleeding. Police were there on foot almost immediately, and there is now a large police presence with the street blocked off."

Update #1 from the comments:
"The shooting took place in front of 4518 at 4:34 PM. The targets were on the west side of the street and the shooter on the east. One of the two hit in the shooting ran up the street and fell behind a blue van in front of 4522. An officer on a bicycle showed up while I was on the phone with 911. The paramedics arrived 5 minutes after the shooting.

The one who was found behind the van was hit in the chest and is not expected to survive. I didn't see where the other person was hit.

The shooter was on the opposite side of the street near the south end of the Section 8 building on the east side of the street. He fled by car. There are at least two cooperating witnesses, i.e., not gang bangers, who saw the car. I saw the shooter, briefly, and the gun, but not the car.

The police found a car on Beacon that they are trying to confirm as the suspect's vehicle.

They found a couple of shell casings.

I heard a total of two shots although there could have been three. The shooter was pretty close to the targets, but I'm still amazed at the accuracy. It does not appear that any shots hit the buildings.

Some of the residents of 4522 were trying to coax the identity of the shooter out of one of the injured banger's cohorts but he was not cooperating."

Update #2: A reader sends in a photo showing the scene at Magnolia & Sunnyside.

  2. I saw it. 2 people shot I think at close range because only 2 shots were fired. One in the chest looked pretty bad. Street is blocked off. After the 2 were shot the gang bangers jumped around yelling for the ambulance to come. "Wheres the fucking ambualance!"

  3. All you had to do was read the observations on this blog (and the comments section) for the past few weeks to know something like this was gonna happen sooner or later on this stretch of Magnolia.

  4. I am beyond disgusted with this. Gunshots in this block have become a nightly occurrence. Now they aren't confined to alleyways in the wee hours of the morning but are happening in the middle of the street during broad daylight steps away from a usually busy playground. The loitering at the strip mall at Wilson/Magnolia and the pedestrian walkway at Magnolia/Sunnyside must be ended. The thugs and punks living in the giant apartment building and the other section 8 housing need to be rousted out and removed. It is only a matter of time before a child gets shot. All of this a stones throw away from our Alderman's office! THIS IS CRAZY!!

  5. The people on the corner of Wilson and Magnolia were yelling "break the fucking window break the fucking window" before the shots were fired. Clearly that corner is a problem that is continually ignored and now look what we get.

  6. Crap. I knew something was going on when I saw a group of 10 guys walking south on the 4400 of Malden towards the section 8 courtyard.

I hope the guys are caught and put away, for life.

  9. TO ALL PRIVATE RESIDENCES IN THE AREA - Does anyone have any security camera footage?

We literally have a warzone going on over there.

Again I say - FOLLOW THE MONEY - Take this information to the Management of Target and ask for their help and their voice in fighting this. Them, the owners of Lawrence House, and the Gangbangers are the only voices in the ward.

  10. The next time you don't call 911 when you have a hunch something is about to happen, think of this. We all saw this coming from a mile away.

  11. There's nothing quite like stepping out of your car after getting home from work and wondering why there are 3 families and roughly 7 children hiding under the play equipment in the normally busy but now empty Bronco Billy Playlot. Such a safe community we live in when families can't even take the kids to a playground, literally next door to a school, without worrying about getting shot at 4:30 in the afternoon. This is beyond ridiculous at this point. I'm standing outside watching the same cast of characters....go figure all in white shirts, yell, point, some screaming on their cell phones about how they can't let this go down in their hood(and I don't think these were safety concerns). A car drives by, slows down to look at them and they all scream in not so many words to get the F out of this neighborhood. Again, go figure, the guy in the car wasn't wearing a white shirt....I'm guessing they don't belong to the same book club. Everyday on this street you see the same cast of characters. Once every few weeks this happens, the cops come, it's quiet for a few days. wash rinse repeat. I've called 911, I attend CAPS meetings, I'm out in the neighborhood, I've attempted the alderman's office....(guess the response there...or silence)....I'm so fed up with all of this....what else has to happen for something to change....everytime this goes on I can't help but think of the families and kids that are literally a few feet away....it's only a matter of time before these obviously skilled marksman miss their mark. On the bright side I can go to Target tonight. On my walk on Magnolia and down Wilson I am lucky enough to see crime tape, at least 10 police officers, maybe a shell casing, some blood on the curb, turn down wilson and walk through the drunks, drug addicts, and mentally ill by the award winning Wilson El stop.....it's a fair trade off for those low low prices when I need Charmin.

  12. Target is a private retail store. It is not their responsibility to do anything about the gang bangers or crime in the streets in our ward. They do care about making it safe for customers on their property. I called the Corp. Target office and thats about all they would say also. Crime in the streets is not the responsibility of Target. Inside their store or outside on their property is. I do feel sorry for the residents that have to put up with this crap on their block. The residents must keep calling 911 and be willing to file and sign complaints and go to court against these punks is a good start to clean their block up of these low-life slugs. A trip down to the local FBI office down town can also be helpful. They would have many resourses that they could tell you to contact other then our good for nothing alderman and the Police that can do only so much.

  14. I challenge all the readers to flood Shillers email box with your comments and concerns. Demand a neighborhood meeting and change-including more police presence and a better job and not tolerating loitering. I know many of you have done this before but please it is time to ban together and do it all at once. Believe that your voice has power!

  15. Police detectives are canvassing the neighborhood for witness accounts. Please let them in and speak with them if they come to your door.

To the extent that he could, the detective said that my information regarding the suspect, etc. was consistent with what they were gathering from others. Let's hope it leads to an arrest. Since somebody actually died, there's actually a chance that the justice system won't screw us and let the shooter off this time.

  17. Wiseguy, everything you say is true...And I will drop it.

My thinking about Target as an ally is out of frustration more than anything else. Target has a vested interest in making sure their investment succeeds and we need all the help we can get, and that might mean asking for a voice louder than you or I. It was just an idea.

We don't come out and vote on election day, so why not vote with our dollars. No one is asking Target to fight our crime, but they need law abiding citizens with money on their side more than bangers, so why not make them pick a side (don't get me wrong - They have done A LOT to make sure their store is secure - Thanks Target!)

This community needs fresh ideas in light of the complete lack of response from our "leadership." The military isn't here, the Guardian Angels are not here, citizens want to remain anon, etc. etc. etc.

I like to try to think of actionable items, like calling 911, reporting issues to 311, etc.

Thanks for your other suggestions too.

  21. The children from the Hull House were just playing in the parks sprinklers. They missed to shooting only by minutes. This is terrible, because now they don't have a place to play.

  22. COMPLETELY PREDICTABLE!!! I was that street coming home every day and you knew it would happen!

We shouldn't be calling Target, we should be calling the company that owns that corner building including the two agents listed on teh billboard! I'm calling tomorrow and encourage everyone else to as well. It's only when the people running the property give a damn will it matter!

  23. Just coming back from Three Harmony and ran into the aftermath. Police everywhere. A cop told me that the shooter was not from the area and that it was definitely gang related. Hopefully the retaliation can be taken out of our "hood".

  24. Sneki,

Can you give a little more information on which building(s), and I gusess specifically what the building should be doing differently (lights, tenant screenings, etc.).

Also, does anyone know the contact information of the owner/manager of the strip mall. Has anyone ever tried to reach out to them?

  25. After the banger dies will Helen's Campaign donate to the funeral fund like she did for the Ali thug?

  26. A month ago or so I contacted the Realtor of the strip mall but he would not give me the name of the owner. I did tell him about the problem he acted like he was concerned and was going to tell the owner but I doubt if that ever happened.

  27. @Wiseguy and @Stash:

Actually - considering the "new laws allowing corporations to spend company money on election campaigns" Target could donate (another) $150,000 to a campaign... this time to a candidate who can stick it to Shiller and clean up this mess! Thoughts y'all?

  28. Does anyone of the UU super-sleuths know how to locate the owner of the strip mall in the public records? Anyone? Beuhler?

    ReplyDelete
  29. STASH: They are trying to lease the open stores in the strip mall at Magnolia and Wilson where the gang bangers all hang out. I don't have the phone numbers, but will try to take a pic in the next day or so and see if UU can post for everyone to call.

These are folks that have a financial interest in the success of that property. They have to realize letting these POS loiter on their property, throwing trash everywhere, and intimidating potential customers, can't be good for finding a tenant. They need to engage the Alderman and demand action (maybe she'll listen, though we all know the likelihood of that!). it's worth a shot at least.

  30. the company who operates the buildings at 4513 and 4510 is called Woodlawn Community Development Center.
4429 North Clifton Avenue, Chicago, IL 60640-5603(773) 769-1555‎
They have been contacted many many many times.
Most of the people who live in these buildings are good honest and hard working people, I talked to one today who was just as concerned as us. She waited 11 years to get into this apartment and has 2 foster children, and was asking me if this activity is normal. I told her it was worse than usual.

  31. You should be able to get the property owner's name, or the name of their designated agent (this would be their attorney, etc., not their real estate agent) by going to the Recorder of Deeds website, or possibly the County Assessor's website.

  34. If there is a building that is the root of many issues, call the building inspectors on them. In wards with responsive aldermen this is a common tactic to go after bad buildings. Usually if the landlord doesn't care who they rent to, they will have other violations. Hit them where it hurts.
