Gay Chicago was there when Target at Wilson Yard opened. Read about it here: "Target, Open in Uptown, Is Under Fire At Home."
A reader writes in: "I thought it was kind of Uptown-ish, but my daughter was in Target yesterday and related that the security guard should be paid more than he is receiving because he was involved in chasing the 12 and 13 year olds who have "found" the store and are causing chaos by taking the carts for the disabled. Welcome to Uptown! Is the honeymoon coming to an end? I wonder if others saw any typical Uptown behavior?
Also, I have noticed now on two visits that Aldi has "cleaned up their act" or maybe Target has cleaned it up. The "front of the back" of the store was always disgusting with litter. Now it's clean, so that's good news."
I actually went 3 separate times to the Target this weekend.
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday, there was a woman walking the ailes on a cell phone talking to someone saying...
"I bring him up to this brand new store, and he has to go and get caught stealing"
This made me sad. Mafe even worse by her walking around talking about it to someone on a cell phone!
I do have high hopes for the store and the positive things that could come from it.
I made a bet that there would be a shooting by end of day Sunday in, or in front of Target- Im glad that I lost the bet! However it's sad that this Target has to put up with some of the low lifes that frequent Uptown.
ReplyDeleteI was there when that gang fight started and left right around the time cops were responding.
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to be in a brand new Target filled with stock but the second I left the garage I was reminded why I left this area.
Unless the management high is absolutely brain-dead, I'm sure they knew what they were getting into. Well, crap, Target is big on supporting local communities. How about funding some educational type programs, aimed at shaping up our fine youths of Uptown? I'll teach some of those classes myself.
ReplyDeleteTarget has every right to protect their investment and maintain a safe environment for folks like me that want to spend our money at their store.
ReplyDeleteIf word get around that you steal at Target, you will get caught, people will stop trying. But only if Target has the support of local law enforcement and the courts to follow-up.
Imagine if word got around that if you shoot up Uptown, you will get sent to prison for a long time. Ahhh....
It'll probably stay okay until they are allowed to start selling booze. They ought to install a mailbox near the entrance right away in case that happens, it is the epicenter of any good drinking party, just ask the folks at Sheridan/Lawrence.
ReplyDeleteThis target will end up like the walmart on north ave, full on undesirables.
ReplyDeleteUndesirables? You mean people like Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, right?
ReplyDeleteTypical Uptown behavior? Really? Look I was there Sunday--and maybe I missed the "typical" Uptown behavior or just missed the "low lifes" but I thought it was a beautiful sight. Not just because Target was there but because I saw so many people--different kinds of people, truly diverse--in and out of that store. The whole street looked more vibrant than I have seen it in a long time. You all say you "hope" it will be positive and successful but the pessimism some of you heap toward this store leaves me wondering. I mean, what do you do, walk around looking for some bit of negative minutiae to run tell Update about?
ReplyDeleteWell how about something positive: I saw black, white, hispanic, asian, indian, young, old and infirm people in and out of Target this weekend. I saw a staff that was immediately responsive to an older woman who had fainted in the aisle. I saw a big, brightly lit and well-stocked store. I saw people making ample use of the Broadway stop right in front of the store. I saw people walking up and down Broadway, and no one seemed frightened. The area was still somewhat gritty and urban and somewhat true to Uptown, but still bustling and vibrant and alive, just the way you'd want things on a beautiful summer day. I KNOW positive things will come from it.
TELL IT UPTOWN WRITER...TELL IT!The target is here...let's try some positivity on for size...
ReplyDeleteTarget's homophobia
ReplyDeleteI just spent $150 at this store. Now, I have second thoughts.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/27/target-homophobia-ceo-gre_n_660990.html
"Target's Chief Executive Steinhafel said gay employees have been concerned about the money helping state Rep. Tom Emmer, who opposes gay marriage."
"The Associated Press reports that Emmer is a fiery conservative who lauds Arizona's strict approach to illegal immigration, once advocated chemical castration for sex offenders"
"[T]he Minnesota Independent has also linked Emmer to a Minnesota Christian "punk-rock ministry" that supports the killing of gays and lesbians."
And check this lady's protest out...really cool!

Funny - regarding Target selling booze. I was at the store last night and a man who already appeared intoxicated yelled out to a Target employee "do you guys sell beer?!"
ReplyDeleteThe employee responded "not yet."
