Raise Your Hand For TIF Reform

A reader sends in this link and info:
"Raise Your Hand Coalition, recently formed to advocate for school funding in Illinois, is circulating a petition asking Mayor Daley to stop the diversion of tax revenue from our public schools to TIFs. Here is a link to the petition.

I thought this might be of interest to Uptown Update readers. In my opinion, this is a win-win--more money for the schools, less for the slush funds! I don't know what the chances of anything changing are, but the more people know about the TIFs, the better."

  1. I will raise it when the teachers and the unions stop all their wasteful spending and stop crying every year about class size and pay raises. I guess thats more important then being a real teacher and leader for our kids like they once where before.

  2. I think that's a little out of line... It's the CEO and the appointed (not elected) school board who are in charge of spending, and though I can't argue that our union leadership was "frugal" their money comes mainly from our dues (I'm a teacher.) We negotiated a contract when things were good, and didn't get bonuses or pay increases immediately. Consider the millions spent on consulting, professional development, administrative costs, and the building of new schools before coming at us like we're the bad guys, please. Part of being a good teacher is advocating for your students, and I don't think conceding to make less and work more is a long-term solution to improving education. Neither do the parents of the students I work with, and I see nothing but good coming from a band of stakeholders being well informed and putting pressure on the mayor.
