Lawrence & Broadway, Circa 1998

The Chicago-centric drama Early Edition filmed the episode "The Fourth Carpathian" around the area of Lawrence and Broadway, including inside and outside the Uptown Theatre (above).  It aired on April 18, 1998, and judging from the weather, we suspect it was filmed a month or so prior to that.  There are several brief tracking shots of the neighborhood, including Borders when it was Goldblatt's (we remember that clock!) and the Bank of America building when it was covered with those godawful metal panels.  Other local landmarks, like the pancake house, look exactly the same.  If you've got 42 minutes to kill, and you're quick with the freeze-frame button, have a look:  Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

  1. Just so people don't have to waste time sitting through this awful program, the Lawrence and Broadway corner is at about 6:35 in part 3. And the inside of the Uptown Theater is about 8:10 in part 4. I live above the Borders and it was very nostalgic to see that huge clock again.
