Yesterday the City Council approved an extremely watered-down version of a ordinance to create an inspector general to oversee their own behavior. This ordinance requires that an alderman can only be investigated after the inspector general receives permission to do so, from a board that hasn't found a single instance of wrongdoing by an alderman in the history of its existence.
Several reform-minded aldermen objected to the ordinance, calling it (rightfully so) a sham. Ald. Fiorietto was quoted as saying, ""This is a toothless tiger that is constitutionally impaired. And yet we need oversight here, and it really wasn't presented in this ordinance."
And closer to home?
Ald. Helen Shiller, 46th, said the proposal is a step in the right direction, allowing the City Council to address criticism that they don't have anyone keeping an eye on them. "Is this perfect? Nothing we've ever done has been perfect, as far as I know," Shiller said.
The media unfairly paints aldermen as corrupt simply because they have entered public service, Shiller said. "That's not borne out in fact," she said.
Read the whole story at the Tribune.
Or maybe they are painted as corrupt because they are corrupt.
ReplyDeleteIs it me, or is Shiller talking more like Daley everyday? She can barely get a straight sentence out of her mouth without rambling off onto multiple tangents. Yet, that "nothings ever perfect" line sounds just like a crafted sound bite from the Daley media spin doctors.
ReplyDeleteOh, good lord.
ReplyDeleteBut, hey ... congratulations are in order for the dear alderman: she's officially crossed to the other side and now represents the exact type of public servant that she once so vehemently opposed.
She is now a typical Daley-centric alderman.
Well done, sweet cheeks.
Oh, and note how the Trib doesn't list her a "reform-minded" alderman, anymore.
Once she got in line to reap the benefits of the Chicago gravy train, Helen's days as a Madison Wisconsin activist became a dim memory...
ReplyDeleteHad a real city inspector general been in place, he or she would be allowed to investigate her lie about obtaining community approval for the latest TIF.
ReplyDeleteOf course she's going to fight reform. Sounds like she's definitely running again. I think she's doing it on IP's dare.
Well at least she actually voted on this issue. She did not say "present" or abstain because "she was so torn over the issue" like she did with the big box ordinance.
ReplyDeleteThis time her opponents can ask lots of questions about why she did not push for a real solution prior to the next election. I remember James C. saying 4 years ago during the debate that he felt all alderman should be watched the same as all other city employees. Helen said something to the effect that "he had no idea what it was like to be alderman."
I guess most of us also fall into the category, it is a shame she will not meet with us to demonstrate all the work she does. Instead we get one line quotes in the paper and lots of messages or requests that are never returned.
like she did with the big box ordinance.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that she didn't vote on the parking meter lease, either.
Holy Moley,
ReplyDeleteI don't claim to know whether St. Helen of Shiller plans to run agin'.
I hope she does.
If she thought I was a pain in the ass last election with the late "What the Helen" website, she should see what I have planned for 2011.
I had one of my friends create a way to link the property tax database to voter rolls. Just wait until the tax increases come out next November.
Can you say custom campaign literature? I knew you could.
We'll have to see who emerges as her strongest challenger. I suspect it will be Cappleman, but according to Lake Effect News Gerald Farinas is still in the hunt.
Fear Farinas. The spectacle of a Alan Keyes supporter running against Shiller boggles my drunken mind.
In any case that database will be offered to her strongest opponent or the runoff opponent for a small price.
The price? I get to appear at the victory party with a parrot on my shoulder, my running prosthetic leg, a kilt, and two hookers to be named later.
"....nothing is perfect..." she should know. She's pathetic....
ReplyDeleteEvery single Alderman that voted for this watered version needs to be voted out of office come February. Enough is enough. The media needs to hound these alderman and start their own investigation into their public and private dealings.
