Streetlight OR Squirrel's Nest?

A reader writes in:
"I live on Malden and one of the things I love about Sheridan Park are the antique streetlights that line the sidewalks. We need all the light on the streets we can get. I was walking down Beacon just off Wilson the other day and noticed that the lightpole in front of the large tan courtyard building on the northwest corner (4600?) has been turned into a squirrel's nest. I mentioned it to a neighbor of mine who said she had called the "W&W Properties" management company last year and nothing was ever done about it. I heard from another neighbor that this building has now turned into some sort of DCFS building for the state, so who knows if it is even managed by the same company now. I'm sure there are other burnt out lights but this one is so blatantly out of commission. Are these taken care of by the city? Anyone know?"

  1. I haven't been around that long, but I remember hearing something about these lights being installed when Sheridan Park was designated a historic district. Probably had to be purchased by the building owner at the time. I could be wrong though...

I definitely do not think they are original circa-1900 lights, but they sure are cool. Wish we had more of them.

  2. Can anyone provide any more history as to the nature of the building referred to in this post. Is it generally the site of problems, or is it simply a matter of poor maintenance.

Perhaps the block club for that block would consider an initiative to reach out to the building owners.

Many of those vintage lights are in disrepair. Wouldn't it be nice to see them working again?

I for one am sick and tired of one-off poorly maintained buildings in our community. No one is asking for perfection, but a little pride might actually spread.

  3. Hmmm Stash-
That would fall under the Beacon Block Club, but we have been hearing nothing but crickets from them since around October.

  5. It's sort of a penthouse for squirrels! I like it.

  6. If this is a city streetlight, shouldn't you call the 311 non-emergency number and tell them?
