No Sign Of Popeye's

A reader sends in the following pic and info:
"We just drove by the Wilson L and the ugly Popeye's sign that has blighted this station for years has been removed. I hope that when the storefronts are renovated that Jones Lang & LaSalle put restrictions on what types of signs can be put back up. Hanging signs on the inside of the window would look much better here. I can't wait for the renovation to start!"

  1. "blighted"? I don't see anything at Wilson and Broadway that seems blighted.
    Maybe more like Dante's "Inferno"?

The corner does remind me of a Hieronymus Bosch painting, and that's not a good thing.

Again, one would think that the area closely surrounding one's Ward Office, would be a shining example of hope. Change has got to come.

  2. so we want businesses, but we don't want them to put a sign up on the business.

    Seems logical.

  3. I think the point, Otto, is that it's reasonable to say "no" to a sign designed to attract interstate travellors from 1/2 mile away.

  4. Bradley is right. Businesses can alter their signage to their environment. I went to Downtown Plymouth, MA last month and their Domino's Pizza sign fits the block, and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. There is no reson why a business can't adapt. One size fits all is NOT written in stone!

  5. Bradley and daveplomin,
While I agree that the sign was atrocious and could have fit in better, I think Stark is getting at something a bit deeper. "Blighted" is a loaded word, especially in the context of anything associated with a TIF. Please read the article in the UU post directly before this one as it explains it far better than I can. I think a better term could have been used in the link. Call it an eyesore, an atrocity, or a corporate monstrosity...just don't call it blight.

  6. That "Uptown Station" sign looks very cool! Hope that can be kept/worked in somehow.
