Interactive Fun

The Sun-Times posted an interactive map of every police beat in Chicago, color-coded to reflect the number of violent crimes that happened in each during the first quarter of 2010.  The reader who pointed it out to us says:  "Beat 2311 sticks out like a sore yellow thumb in the middle of a lot of green beats on the North Side."

In fact, it's the only "yellow beat" on the lakefront between Grant Park and Rogers Park.  Remember this next time Ald. Shiller makes her claim that the 23rd District is the safest place in the city.  Remember that the 23rd District runs from Fullerton to Lawrence.  Remember that she doesn't ever mention the crime statistics for Uptown alone.

Check it out here and click around.  Hours of entertainment!  Especially now that Google's PacMan home page has gone away.

  1. This map is kinda fun, but not particularly useful to me.

I have seen more videos of assult on the east side of the 23rd posted on Uptown Update alone than reported on this Map.

If the cops (who do a good job in a very challenging (almost Unfair) environment, don't get me wrong) actually took a hard stance on the bafoonery going on east of Broadway, that little box would light up RED very quickly.

Oh wait, they can't because there are not enough of them and they have NO SUPPORT from the Alderman to actually reduce crime in our neighborhood.

    Alas...

  2. What I find interesting is that Uptown has the same Crime Index as Wicker Park, or at least the beat to the south west of the Damen station.
