Heavy CPD Presence Friday

A reader writes:  "Just sitting here, watching a groups of 12-13 year olds, boys and girls, rough housing at Uplift. And by 'rough housing,' I mean, body slams on the concrete: boys hitting girls: girls kicking boys when they're down ... kids will be kids.

Until, an adult from Uplift stepped in and commanded everyone to 'go home.' Nothing more was said other than 'go home,' and the crowd dispersed. Heavy CPD presence around the school today. Loudspeakers urging kids to break up and move along. Someone reads UU, it seems."

  1. Flashback to 2005 when Helen's inner circle took over the school:

"But there was at least one surprise that came out of community discussions in recent weeks. In the Uptown neighborhood, a small band of Chicago Public Schools teachers is planning to operate a new program in the Arai Middle School building, edging out Perspectives and Chicago International, two prominent organizations that operate charter schools in the city.

The teachers had won the backing of a transitional advisory council, one of the community groups created to advise the school system. On Friday, schools chief Arne Duncan surprised some in the education community by adopting that recommendation for Uplift, the name of the teacher-led group.

Ald. Helen Shiller (46th), who was involved in the process, called the three Arai teachers who took the lead in the effort "incredible."

Perspectives co-director Diana Shulla-Cose was disappointed with the district's decision.
"We are saddened that the Uptown kids and families will not have an opportunity to experience [our school]," she said. "We believe that the larger Uptown community would have welcomed us with open arms."

    We're saddened, too.

    *wink wink*

keep up the good work and keep those cards and letters hitting the e-mail boxes of those closest to our community's youth.

and remember...no one running a school wants their face plastered all over the news for not doing their job.

spend ten minutes writing a note to the head of a school in the area.

    Cha Ching!

  3. Is this the school that Helen Schiller is crowing about because all the graduates are going to college? If they're "fisticuffing" so much, how can they possibly get to college?

There are published "memoirs" on the school's site, written by students. These kids are not going to college. If they are, I weep for our future. I can tell you that grammar and English are in no way being taught in this school. Basic standards for grammar; punctuation, spelling, usage. It's embarrassing, and the low standards and expectations are blatant. What are parents supposed to do that don't have a choice? The violence is beyond scary, and there is just no hope of any kind of education. It's sad, very, very sad,
