There's an
article in the Tribune about Chicago enforcing curfew hours this summer in an attempt to stop the violence. People under 17 who are out on the streets without a parent or guardian can be picked up by the police and held until their parents come to fetch them. "The city curfew this summer will remain
10pm Sunday through Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday." Not a bad call to make if you see a bunch of kids congregating late at night and think there's going to be trouble.
Right, we aren't going to enforce people drinking and selling drugs in public but we are going to enforce a curfew law. OK.. Sure.. We shall see what happens but I wont hold my hopes up.
ReplyDeleteHow about the violence that occurs at all other times of the day. Do you think we could do something to stop that? This is just rhetoric.
They should make it 6 PM!!
ReplyDeleteReading the Trib, there is more violence than I remember in the City these days. Thank God I am 30 miles due east of the hellhole!
Disgusting, and in my opinion, unconstitutional.
ReplyDeleteHowever... minors should note the following:
'Based on the 1998 Charlottesville case, it seems that the Supreme Court will permit curfews which contain liberal exceptions, with the most important being a kid’s right to exercise his or her First Amendment rights. So, the Emmitsburg statute allows an exception if ”The juvenile is out after curfew hours while exercising first amendment rights, such as that covered by Constitutional freedom of speech, religion or right of assembly.”'
Carry around a sign protesting the curfew and you're good to go. If I lived here when I was a kid I would be protesting the hell out of this. If I had kids, I'd tell 'em to feel free to be out until MY curfew, and that I'd gladly pick them up if they got brought in. Freedom of movement, it's a good thing.
I see punks in Clarendon park at 12:30AM when I walk my dog and they look about 14 or 15 hanging around the tennis courts drinking beer. I called the cops and seen a car from my window about 25 min. later roaming the park area. I thought the park has their own park police to patrol the areas.
ReplyDeleteMy alley is ablaze with parties and scuffles into the wee hours. Lots of white Tee's in-a-blur down the street too.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'm so glad that Miz Candice has extended an invitation. Have fun!
Might be a good idea to have a metal detector at the door though.
Not sure if it's the effect of a holiday weekend or the curfew, but my part of Uptown is quite quiet this evening. Unconstitutional or not.
