Uptown's Exciting Evening

Here are some news reports from our lovely spring night.  Let's see, a stabbing, a stolen car, a sidewalk escape, a gang riot with property damage to the Wilson El, a fire on Lakeside (quickly extinguished)... Somehow this exchange from All About Eve comes to mind:

"We know you.  We've seen you like this before.  Is it over, or is it just beginning?"
"Fasten your seatbelts.  It's going to be a bumpy night!"

  1. I'm sending you an email about a verbal incident that illicited 7 police cars as a response just after 7PM. This even was quite bad for Uptown.

  2. I hope the police are out again today.

  3. "Verbal incident??" Doesn't the cut throat raise this to a higher level? Too bad Mercy Housing (Owners of the building) didn't have their sham "Uptown Neighborhood Action Coommittee" out there taking "Action."

  4. What can the police charge these thugs that started the riots? I mean who long can lock these people up. I am at my limit of saying these are just good kids that need some attention! They need to be send away as they all will hurt anyone without thinking.

  6. Meanwhile up on the 1200 block of Carmen in Andersonville, folks were all abuzz about whether or not there was a shooting on Magnolia.

Um, a movie shooting, that is. You see, the streets north of Helen's home looked particularly charming last night. Clean sidewalks, leafy trees, little kids taking the bicycles out for the first time this season...

...not being almost run over by a stolen car at the scene of a stabbing.

  7. I saw these guys arguing before I went to play pool. I was going to call the police but a squad rolled up right then so I got in the cab and left. That was at seven.

    This is crazy !!

  8. @ Jason - I say call the Cops anyway, even if you see them rolling up on something that appears suspicious. When you call, the dispatcher will usually let you know if they are already aware of the problem, and issues with more calls get better responses. Alternatively, you could use the txting system if you don't want to be late for pool.

In Uptown, odds are high they might have actually been responding to something totally unrelated...

Statistics say crime is down - I say perceived unrest and chaos is UP.

  9. Yeah Stash I agree. I didn't think much of it at the time. This is the first time in 9 years of Uptown that I have seen that is this crazy. Our block is usually pretty quiet.

  10. the crime scenes are piling up on top of crime scenes? please: one at a time, one crime per crime scene

  11. Now, Now, Now. Why all the excitement? I distinctly remember Mayor Daley standing next to Aldermanic candidate Helen Shiller at the Joan Arai (now Uplift) school discussing the community's complaint about crime in Uptown. THE MAYOR HIMSELF told us that Shiller didn't have a crime problrm in her ward because the 23rd District stats show a low overall crime rate. (Nevermind that the Lakeview end of the ward has virtually zero crime while the Uptown area is a shooting gallery.) Under this police districts containment policy, crime is cracked down on south of Uptown's Mason - Dixon line (Montrose) but tolerated north of it. And, hey, if a few women and kids get shot in the process, well hell, the alderman and Mayor think that is a small price to pay in order to concentrate public housing into a Shiller voting block and to relocate the Black P-Stones out of downtown's Cabrini Green and into Uptown.

Bravo Mayor and Shiller. The fruits of your labors are ripening.
