Uptown Neighborhood Tours

As in previous years, Chicago Neighborhood Tours is including Uptown in its Summertime Sampler series.  Tours are $20 per person and are held on three Fridays:  June 11, July 23, and September 3rd, 10am to 1pm.  Tours do sell out in advance, so if you've always wanted to go and have been putting it off (quick look in mirror), now is a good time to make your reservations.

  1. Don't get me started. Uptown bus tours?
Good grief, what 'sights' would I include, beyond the obvious.
Bullet casings at Sheridan and Leland.......tomb-like stagnation at the 46th Ward office.....smash and grabs at cars parked on Montrose......urine soaked Wilson L stop...Soviet Era housing block at Montrose and Broadway. I need to stop, since I'm getting dizzy.

If I want to find peace and stability in Uptown, I head toward Bertha Palmer's crypt in Uptown. Sad.

  3. I went on a tour with this company and we toured Greek Chicago. It was a great experience. I would definitely try an Uptown tour!

  4. I would definitely NOT recommend this tour. I went on the tour after seeing it on this blog, and was very disappointed. We started on Hutchinson street, where the guide spent about 15 minutes explaining a bit about the street's history; not bad, but not terribly interesting, either. Then we got on the bus, rolled right through the intersection of Lawrence and Broadway with no more than a few words about the Uptown, the Broadway Bank, the Riviera, the Green Mill, the Aragon, etc, and proceeded on to Andersonville. Here, they parked the bus and let everyone out for 30 minutes of "free time," in which they recommended we get a pastry from the Swedish bakery. When I asked the guide what was next, he said the plan was to drive over to Lincoln Square for more free time. Basically, this is a tour for little old ladies from the suburbs who are afraid to take the El.

For a really interesting, informative tour of Uptown, take the Chicago Architecture Foundation walking tour (http://caf.architecture.org/Page.aspx?pid=592). It's fabulous. Here's the description:

Uptown was once a playground for fashionable young Chicagoans with plenty of spending money. Those days are gone, but many terra cotta treasures remain. Come explore the heart of this North Side district and the buildings that stand in testament to the popular styles of 1920s Chicago.

    Schedule: May 15, June 12, July 10, August 14, September 11 at 10:30 am

  5. The City iced the regular Uptown tour when the staff felt the neighborhood had improved too much...
