It's Not Easy Being Green

While the communities around Uptown have hosted flourishing farmers' markets over the past few years, Uptown's only managed to have "markets" consisting of one booth selling baked goods, and last year no farmers' market at all.  (Pretty punk for an area whose alderman is trying to sell the concept that a Green Center/Fish Farm can thrive here.)  This year we'll have another chance to see if vendors who sell food produced by nature, not ovens, can be enticed to set up shop.

According to Chicago's official tourism site, "Fresh fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers are just some of the goods that will be sold."  The 2010 Uptown Farmers' Markets will take place on Thursdays, 8am-1pm, beginning June 24.  The new site will be Weiss Hospital, 4646 N Marine.  We'll be there, hoping for great products and fresh produce.  Time will tell if it'll be available, or if we need to toddle off to Andersonville and Lincoln Square again this year.

  1. Weekday mornings really aren't the way to go. One of the things that made the Andersonville Farmers' Market so successful last year is that they had it in the early evening. I find that I don't make it out to weekend morning markets nearly as often as I'd like.

But with the Andersonville time slot I would go there straight after work almost every week; probably 80% of the produce we ate over the summer came from that market. Working downtown there is no way I can make a weekday morning market, especially not one that starts at 8. I'm guessing the same is true for a large percentage of the target audience for these sorts of markets.

  2. Sounds good and I';d love to patronize such a place, but as I work a full time job during the day I personally will never get there. For many people, the market either needs to have hours into the (early) evening (like the Andersonville market) or be open on a weekend rather than a week day. Oh, well...
