LEN: "Residents Swamp CAPS Meeting After Shooting On Wilson & Broadway"

Of course Lorraine Swanson was there....

"Attendance at Tuesday’s CAPS Beat 2311 meeting was higher than usual as residents and business owners gathered to learn more about the afternoon shooting at Wilson and Broadway that injured a woman who was caught in gang crossfire on Feb. 25."  Read the entire story at Lake Effect News.

UU Note:  This is disturbing.... "In other business, residents reported hearing five to six shots fired in the area of Lawrence and Magnolia early Monday morning. Rios said they were aware of the situation but only received one 911 call reporting shots being fired."  Readers, if you see or hear anything suspicious, call 911.  Don't worry about "bothering" the cops -- they can sort out the priorities.  If you don't call when there's trouble, how can the cops help?  Another reason to call:  CPD assigns manpower to areas based on 911 reports.  No calls, no cops.  It's up to you.  We're happy to do what we can, but writing to a blog saying "I heard shots last night" won't solve the problem.  A call to 911 is where it all starts.

  3. Ms. Swanson is a treasure.

Meg, I think Uptown has become '911town'

  4. Egads, we get more info from LEN than our elected alderbeast.

  5. One call?

It appears four Uptown Update readers heard the shots. Only one acknowledged that they called 911.

Please call 911 every time you hear or see something suspicious.

  6. Both alleged offenders in last week’s shooting live in buildings where large numbers of gang members are known to reside, Boehmer said.
    Which buildings? CHA buildings?

  9. I find it sad that so many people have gotten shot at across the street from her ward office while she continues to deny there is a violent crime problem in our neighborhood. I am guessing she and her staff will "Review the notes from the CAPS meeting." In other words no need to attend and speak with her ward residents/political enemies where she might get asked actual questions.

  10. Mr. Salley is a resident in the CHA building on the corner of Racine and Sunnyside. There are three CHA buildings on that corner with a very active drug business along the sidewalk. Why this drug ring has gone on for so long is a mystery to all of us who live nearby.

Every CHA and government subsidized building should have a tenant screening and criminal enforcement policy in place.

It's almost become a joke in Uptown since many tenants involved in criminal acitivity
    feel they are protected by
    you-know-who.

I've had several conversations with neighbors who were being evicted for criminal activity and a frequent comment was, "I'm going to call the__________ office
    (fill in the blank).

  11. I wonder if the _______ office will take those calls and act on the concerns raised by the known criminals? I know that the average constituent (or should I say evil condo owners) usually gets hung up on, often after being treated rudely, by the _______ office for the most routine of support requests.

  12. Maybe we should rent a billboard on that corner with a giant counter on it. "Number of people shot on this corner...Will you be next?"

That should be inviting to people getting off the train to shop at Target and the other bustling retail off the Wilson El stop.

  13. Regarding calling 911 - Agreed - Call for everything if that's the way to get things done.

Just make sure you have a ligitimate concern (which are not hard to find here in Uptown). Remember, responding to 911 calls creates risks too, so be fair to the folks that are charged with responding.

  14. Maybe we should rent a billboard on that corner

There's a rather nicely sized, east-facing billboard above Wilson, adjacent to the L stop.

  15. Stash,

I have often wondered about doing something just like that, especially during election time. I wonder how she would react to a billboard that listed the violent crime with a link to the famous video from last summer that family members of mine saw in LONDON! But my Alderman explained away.

  16. Was talking with my spouse last night about the idea of sponsoring the billboard, and we'd be very down for it.
