A reader sends in photos of an alleged drug bust that took place this afternoon on the 4600 block of Racine, just steps from Truman College. Good work, CPD!
Maybe I am just more sensitive to it, but it seems like we have way more police cruising our streets of Uptown than most neighborhoods. Not complaining one bit. I think we need it given our little science experiment of warehousing the downtrodden.
Just seems like every time I turn around there is a cop driving by me. Kudos I guess to the men and women in blue.
Wow! Right in front of my bldg, literally! I could move, but I choose to stay in Uptown because the police cruise the streets so frequently. Thank goodness for Truman because I think we would not have such a police presence if the college were not there. Kudos!
Eye in the Sky, it is not just you. There are a many police cars cruising through the neighborhood (at least in my section of Sheridan Park). Malden/Sunnyside, and more than any neighborhood I have lived in in Chicago.
It's crazy that even with the amount of police around that people continue to sell drugs and such. They are just worthless individuals, who don't give a crap about getting caught.
I'm one of those punks. One of those people who the police stopped and put up against a car on two occasions while riding my bike and walking down the street.
I'm one of those punks who the a policeman virtually threatened to kill when I asked him a question about what the person did who he was questioning.
Just because the police are going through your pockets doesn't mean you committed a crime or the police are doing their job.
The police in America are basically farming for the Prison Industrial Complex...it's breaking down a little because states cannot afford to pay for the costs of private run jails now that the real criminals in Goldman Sachs, the banks and government have stolen all our money resulting in lower home values .....Uptown residents
Speaking of which, tonight there were about 6 squad cars at Sheridan and Lawrence tonight at about 6:30. Not sure what was up.
By the way....I've notice a lot of new Police SUV's. Like in the past couple of weeks or so.
Anyone else noticed these new SUV's?
On another unrelated note, since the barricades have come down on the Wilson Yard complex, I've seen a flurry of activity there (on the Montrose entrance). People washing windows and sweeping, and folks rushing in. Does anyone know the schedule, or timetable of what's actually going on there? Thanks.
Stu Piddy - sure there are unreasonable stops, searches, and seizures - that's why we have laws. But I've seen enough drug peddling, gang banging, and prostituting that when I see a Terry pat down in Uptown, I think it's about time! I was afraid Uptown was becoming "Hamsterdam" and I'm not entirely certain that it is not.
I have been playing with the TXT2TIP program lately and have seen the Police respond accordingly. I like the system because you can send MMS messages to the police with the actual picture of the moron committing crimes. Check it out: https://portal.chicagopolice.org/portal/page/portal/ClearPath/Communities/Crime%20Prevention/TXT2TIP
Historically, I wonder what the long term affect the level of police presence we are seeing will have on the neighborhood. Can the police maintain this higher level of patrols and busts? Will it rid Uptown of the ne'er do wells? After election season will it die down or is it truly a response to the crime stimulus? I am in my second home in Uptown. I am comfortable here but part of the comfort was believing Uptown would eventually clean up and not have the gangs/drugs/shootings we see today. What am I doing about it? Doing what I can to keep my building safe and secure and venturing out in my 'hood when I want to. Yes, this is a troll-like comment but I had to get it off of my chest.
The whole CPD is switching over to those SUVs, you'll see more and more this summer. It was a big priority for the Police Superintendent.
And I don't know when Wilson Yards officially opens but I bet residents are in there by mid-January of 2011... so they can vote in the next aldermanic election... in case they are interested in taking a walk to Truman from their $400k+ subsidized housing unit and supporting any particular candidate on election day....
"The police in America are basically farming for the Prison Industrial Complex..."
Well, when its a banner crop year can you blame them! Are you freakin' serious Stu Piddy!?!? I have seen countless drug deals, prostitutes, and a couple gang beatings in my 7 years in Uptown. I was mugged and left unconsious in the dirt once (lucky for me when he choked me, he didn't kill me). Yet the number of arrests pales in comparison. How about the gang "dances" we've seen on the videos?
Just last night I had two of those "punks" tell me I was in their "hood" when I told one of them NOT to piss on a building at Magnolia and Sunnyside.
So if you ARE one of those "punks" (and by "punks" I mean gangbangers, drug dealers, pimps, or prostitutes), then you definitely deserve to be "patted" down by a cop or two in a not so soft fashion.
The "punks" know all too well how easy it is to circumvent our pathetic laws that have been so diluted by "civil rights activists" that's it's all a cop can do to get an arrest to stick and charges to be work on a known offender, often a repeat offender. So they use what they can, including intimidation. I've seen enough of the BS in our neighborhood; I've heard enough gun shots and I don't want my boy getting hit by a stray bullet so I for one am all for whatever methods the police use that may work.
And if some nosy civil rights activist gets offended because he stuck his snout in police business, that's just a crying shame.
I sure hope you meant "civil liberties activists" and not "civil rights". There's a big difference in my mind. To debate about civil liberties and how much a government can intrude on our lives is a healthy thing, and is a debate over philosophy.
Civil rights, as I see it, is about racism and inequalities that have been built into our society for hundreds of years, which is undeniable and terrible. You can't really argue about people fighting to be treated equally. Equal is equal.
I think both types of activism are a good thing, by the way.
Jason - You paint a pretty bleak picture of Uptown. I am sorry for your experiences especially the mugging. That's pretty bad. Hopefully they caught the ba$tard.
Fortunately those are not my experiences in Uptown. Although I live closer to the west end of it and maybe that is why.
I'm not going to jump on you, Stu, because there may be a little bit of truth in what you say. Sure, we've read of lots of cases of the cops stopping and arresting people who probably didn't warrant it. If you are one of the people, I'm sorry it happened to you. It's happened to me a couple of times, once when I was walking across the street from the Green Mill and a cop car pulled up, two cops got out and patted me down. Was I offended? Sure, since i was a communications specialist for a city agency and so far removed from the average street thug (or so I thought). But I got over it. That's not to say that you should just accept it...
But with the amount of random crime going on, the abundance of police presence and searches is going to happen. Sometimes it's warranted, sometimes it's not. But of the times it's warranted, it just may end up saving the life of someone you love in some way. I wish there were a better system or it didn't involve those cases of unwarranted stops. But until then, if it means not being shot at while walking down the street or not having to fight your way through thugs just to get inside your own front door.
You want those random searches to stop? Tell the people, possible friends, whose activities are making it necessary for the abundance of cops in the area to find another line of work and make those stops unnecessary.
Stu, when you see the local gangbangers (or innocent victims, whichever you prefer)selling drugs, harassing passersby, flashing guns, smashing car windows, defacing property or brawling, why don't you ask them why they are doing it. Did you happen to read the headlines tonight about another kid in Uptown getting shot? Maybe you should walk up to some of the gang members and ask them what they were doing and why they would possibly do that. See how they respond. If they start to beat you down or try to shoot you, let me know who if you still think that those men and women in blue (who might be driving by at the time) would be doing "the wrong thing" by questioning one of these other punks.
If you have lived in this city for any length of time, you should know that a police stop can go bad in the blink of an eye, especially when someone passing by tries to put his nose where it shouldn't be. Perhaps that explains why the police may not have liked you interfering with their activities.
Keep your eyes open and try to keep our streets clean by helping the law-abiding citizens and the police. Oh, you also might want to stop being a self-described "punk". You might like the results.

And If you see any of those assholes from "cop watch" trying to video record our Police in an attempt to drum up brutality accusations.....At least stand in front of the camera to block the view. Our Cops need all the help they can get to keep criminals on the run and off of the corners.
Stu Piddy, you owe me a new keyboard. I was sitting at my computer this morning reading all the posts when I came across yours. It was so stupid and funny that it caused me to spit my coffee out all over my keyboard. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it after last night.

2 gone. Another 300 to go. Just another school day for these punks.
ReplyDeleteThere were 5 squad cars at McDonald's on Wilson on a bust last night around 8pm... anyone know anything about that?
ReplyDeleteI heard that three people were arrested at Sheridan and Sunnyside from my roommate. I guess 5 down, 295 to go?
ReplyDelete-Brian
Keep calling 911 and we'll keep having the cruisers! GOOD JOB 911-callers and great job CPD!
ReplyDeleteI saw the Paddy wagon up and about on Lawrence and Sheridan. Any updates?

I recall reading a notice that occupation of the residential portion of Wilson Yard was supposed to begin in Feb. or Mar. oct this year...
