"No Loitering" Signs Surface

A reader sends in the following pic and asks:

"So I was driving on Irving Park toward Sheridan and saw a "No loitering....call 911" sign under the L tracks right next to Tom Tunney's Ann Sather park. Is this new?"

  2. I like it! I can't quite put my finger on why, but I can't think of several spots in Uptown that could benefit from a similar message. And...it would be helpful if people actually did call 911 as the sign suggests (or at least 311).

  3. There is also one at the strip mall at Wilson and Magnolia by the convenience store where the gangbangers like to hang out. Last night I laughed a bit as I saw five or six of them hanging out not 10 feet from the sign.

I'd hate to have to work in that convenience store. One of the very nice individuals who work at the convenience store on Clark and Montrose (kitty-corner from Rayan Plaza where the 7-Eleven is) told me that he used to work there and said people were constantly shoplifting...they finally moved him to his current store (which has been robbed at least twice, including once on Christmas Day) after the bangers wouldn't quit harassing him.

For anyone who regularly walks down Magnolia between Wilson and Montrose, try walking on opposite sides of the street. The east side is relatively clean, but the west side is always littered with trash.

  4. Sign or no sign, loitering, or "remaining in any one place under circumstances that would warrant a reasonable person to believe that the purpose or effect of that behavior is to enable a criminal street gang to establish control over identifiable areas, to intimidate others from entering those areas, or to conceal illegal activities" or "remaining in any one place under circumstances that would warrant a reasonable person to believe that the purpose or effect of that behavior is to facilitate the distribution of substances in violation of the Cannabis Control Act or the Illinois Controlled Substances Act" was already illegal. Anyone else, loiter away! (Just don't obstruct the public way.)
