The Good, The Bad, On Local Nursing Homes

From Ald. Smith's office:  "Alderman Smith is asking for community input into the ongoing enforcement actions being taken at Somerset. Please visit http://www.actionuptown.com/ and take a moment to leave your opinion in the comments section. Please also send this along to your block club members."

On the other end of the spectrum, The SelfHelp Home, just down the street from Somerset, has been ranked 5 stars (out of 5) in a study conducted by US News & World Report, for the second year in a row.  Kudos to them!

  1. I am shocked. Asking constituents what they think? I didn't think any alderman did things like that.

  3. I wonder how many Somerset residents the SelfHelp Home might be able to take in?

The SelfHelp Home should be commended for their excellent care. But the implied comparison is, well, apples and oranges and disingenuous.

  4. YES Jason....imagine an alderman looking for resident's
    input!! Amazing.
Regarding Somerset, I remember Ms. Fire's (Big Chick's) description of a 'New Bedlam' type of activity going on daily out front.....
    sad

  5. We don't have to go to another ward to find "Bedlam." Mercy Housing is in the 46th and its record is shoking.
Miriam-has been little more than a wh**h*** and drug distibution center.
Carlton: almost daily 911 calls bring the police. One resident died last summer and the body wasleft in the room for more than a week. Finally someone called 911 and the police found the body.
Last month the alderbeast gave thim $3.5M in TIF $$.

  6. In response to Buenapk:

This is my point. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Somerset, it only reflects a larger failure of the State of Illinois to adequately address the needs of the mentally ill in IL. Closing Somerset is not solving the problem, only moving it around with a show of 'look what we've done.' If you want to see the root of the problem, watch what the state does with the residents at Somerset and where they go now. Mercy? Carelton? Grasmere? Bryn Mawr Care? Call the Governors office and ask what the plan is.

  7. Jeff. True. These leeches will go as far as they are allowed to exploit. Thanks, Helen, for bankrolling them with tax $$. Every $ given = votes.

  8. Unfortunately, the SelfHelp Home is only for Jewish seniors, not the Somerset clientele.
