Uptown Walgreen's To Get Liquor?

Item: Walgreen Co. is planning to file applications to the city of Chicago on Thursday to sell beer and wine at 18 locations.

Item:  Alderman Schulter has introduced an ordinance to lift the moratorium on new liquor stores on Wilson over by Ashland.  "PO2010-286 Schulter (47).  Amendment of Section 4-60-023 of Municipal Code by deleting Subsection 47.68 to allow issuance of additional package goods licenses on portion of W. Wilson Ave."

The reader who put two + two together adds:  "I doubt it will be a problem, especially since there is Rayan's already across the corner but thought it was interesting that Uptown was one of the first areas they chose to apply for a liquor license in."

  1. Yes, we definitely need more packaged liquor stores in the Uptown area to service all the CUBS fans who will be careening through the neighborhood as they use that new Truman College parking garage, paid for by our local TIF property tax dollars. The new liquor license applications by the two 7-11's within 3 blocks of Walgreens are probably not enough to keep the CUBS fans juiced, particularly when there is a moratorium on liquor sales in the Lakeview Neighborhood toward the end of each CUB games.

Uptown's role, as always, is to serve our neighboring communities.

That's Uptown's role: We and our TIF dollars are here to serve (now literally) those

  2. No wonder Walgreens gave you a contribution.

  3. You're silly truthbearer.

I'm glad we are getting this. We need better liquor store choices then the way overpriced JJ Peppers and other super inflated liquor stores. Jewel is the best choice, but on a Friday it is always pretty busy. The more the better for competition. Hopefully the one on Lawrence and LSD follows suit.

  5. Also, that Rayan's is in the middle of a facelift. Hopefully this all works out in the consumer's favor. I can dream, right?

  6. It came up at a recent block club meeting that they may be trying at Bryn Mawr in Edgewater as well...

  7. Yeah, I'm sure another liquor store will make the difference in customer selection and pricing . . . for the drunks who bum money and then throw the empties in our yards. Plus, now we'll get the privilege of dealing with all those scumbags who hang out a little further east on Wilson in Walgreen as well; I can't wait.

  8. Would you guys be opposed to an upscale beer store in Uptown, something like West Lakeview Liquors? I ask because my husband and I live in Uptown and are just in beginning stages of finding out what it would take to open such a store. Though it wouldn't necessarily be in Uptown and may not be allowed anyway due to moratoriums, we get tired of having to leave our neighborhood for the high-end stuff. The Sheridan L Liquor store is ok but smells awful, and Rayan's is ok, but neither are in quick walking distance from the are where we live - Sunnyside near Sheridan. We may not have a chance in hell though, since we don't contribute to campaigns or bribe. I'd rather open one elsewhere than engage in that stuff.

  9. Rayan's Liquors has decent prices sometimes less than Jewel and Walgreens. Plus they recently redid the place and it looks great!! In addition, they mentioned they will be getting their food license in order to carry fresh fruits and veges as well as diary products etc... I think with their large variety of wines, beers, and hard liquors no other place around there will beat it as a one stop shop! Bravo RAYAN'S you have done the community a favor.
