Welcome, La Ciudad!

A reader writes: "I wanted to let your readership know about a brand new restaurant that a friend and I went to tonight. It's called La Ciudad and it's in the old JJ Fish space in the strip mall at 4515 Sheridan. It opened just this past weekend and one of the owners is the niece of my neighbors, who've lived in Uptown since the early 1980s.

Anyway, it's Mexican food and QUITE tasty. The waiter/co-owner kept bringing us free stuff to taste - and it was ALL amazing. There were so many extras that I had to take part of my dinner home. The decor is a little more upscale and modern than most other Mexican restaurants in the area; the prices are a little higher, but just a little and WELL worth it. The sign in the window says they have free WiFi, and (sadly) it's BYOB, so no yummy margaritas. I'll definitely be back."

Update: A reader took photos of the lunch and dinner menus so you can peruse the prices and bill of fare. As always, click to enlarge.

  4. It's strange that the only way I would have found out about this place is by visiting Uptown Update - or maybe by walking by the place and noticing it. Thank you UU!

What is even stranger, Uptown Business Partners just sent out their latest newsletter via email - no mention of La Ciudad. I thought UBP was there to "promote" business? What a sad, sad excuse for a chamber...

  5. I think I might actually enter that strip mall now. Been here 5+ years and have to say, I have never found a reason to go in there.

  6. Wonderful! This strip has needed some love for some time.

Now if we can only fill the old african grocery space with something more viable than a pawn shop.

The cabbies that hang out there are friendly and cause no problems, but it's be great if it were a vibrant business more than a parking lot hang out

  7. Uptown needs more places like this and we definitely should support La Ciudad. I am a teacher and am plannig on taking some of my colleagues there next Thursday. I am the Mother in law of one of the owners and they are hard working young people and I wish them the best.

  10. We went there on Thursday with neighbors and enjoyed a very tasty meal. I can't go into a Mexican Restaurant without ordering the burrito and they did not disappoint. We will definitely dine there again.

  12. Went on Saturday with friends. Everyone loved it. Especially happy with the guacamole ("This is the best I've had in the city"). We got talking with the owner, a very nice man, who then offered us a free flan to share - it was amazing! Easily the best flan I've ever had. Decadent.
