CPDH Closes Another Argyle Area Restaurant

Three in the last couple months! If you have an Argyle-area restaurant, time to start paying close attention to the health codes....

A North Side restaurant was shut down Wednesday by inspectors from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CPDH). Dong Ky, 4877 N. Broadway, was shut down after CDPH inspectors a clogged three-compartment sink, live cockroaches in the kitchen, and homemade desserts at unsafe temperatures. The restaurant will remain closed until it has corrected all violations and passed re-inspection.

The enforcement action was the 147th time in 2009 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code. Representatives of Dong Ky are scheduled to appear at an administrative hearing on October 22 and pay a fine expected to total $1,750.

Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.

  1. Alot of the ones I seen closed down is because the owner runs the business absent from it. He hardly ever visits it and depends on young and lazy workers he hired to keep the place clean and safe for customers let alone run it to the city code. I also seen ones where owners are present and as you waited for your order cockroaches are seen crawling on the walls and counters...........

  2. Was Ranalli's on Montrose also closed by the Department of Public Health? I noticed a sticker saying the business was closed by order of the city on the door, but it doesn't really indicate if it was for health code reasons or something else.

Those Ranalli's just keep putting themselves out of business. . .

  3. Aron - I haven't heard anything recently, however they were closed last summer (July 2008.) You can find a list of violations here: EveryBlock

  4. Oh...and Ranalli's was cited again in September 2008 too: EveryBlock . Not exactly a winning track record.

  5. Too bad, they have the best Pho around at a great price. Hope they get it together and the fuzz lay off a bit. You can sure tell the city is out to suck every dime out of us!

  6. With the city as strapped for cash as it is, it’s no wonder violations with fines have increased big time.

  7. geep - Though the fines may have increased this year, the number of closures have not. When Ranalli's was closed last June they were the 138th restaurant to be closed in 2008. Given this is 2+ months later in the year we should be at around 175 closed. Dong Ky was only number 147.

  8. geep, you should check your facts before you post. Just a few years ago, the city health department was shutting about 400 restaurants a year---because of severe budget cuts to staffing, they'll be lucky to do half that this year. And fines are still set at what they's always been, $500 for the each severe offense and $250 for a lesser one. So your "increased big time" assertion is nonsensical.

  9. geep - Thanks for the link. Stats from Feb. compared to those now show an actual decline. The number of closures has not proceeded in a linear fashion. 1 per day (as in your link) gives 252 by Sept. 9th, not 147 (the number for Dong Ky.) If the current trend continues we will be at ((147/252)*365)=212 closed at years end, 20 less than 2008 and 52 less than 2007.
