The Bookish Us blog has a wonderful story about Shake, Rattle & Read and its history, along with that of Ric Addy, and Uptown itself. Give it a read!
Shake Rattle & Read and
the Uptown Story

It’s a cliche, but the story of the independent book and music store Shake Rattle & Read is very much the story of Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Visually, the little shop is overwhelmed by its neighbor, the long shuttered Uptown theater. The Uptown towers over Broadway and Lawrence in grime-stained mission style splendor; it hasn’t seen a show since 1981. Next door, Shake Rattle & Read tries hard to stand out with a colorful display, and the doors are wide open on any day when the Chicago weather is remotely forgiving.
