This Space Available

A reader posted in the comments that, upon seeing the big Target logo at the Wilson Yard construction site, she or he wrote to Target to inquire whether or not it meant a store would be built there, or whether it just meant Target was involved in the byzantine TIF financing scheme. Target wrote back: "I don’t have any information about a store in the area/ location/ construction site you mentioned."

Since the big Target logo is apparently there simply as an advertising gimmick, we thought of a few more possibilities for that space in the upcoming months. A letter of intent from Target, which the developer and alderman swear was signed years ago, would go a long way towards convincing us that Target really does intend to build there. In the meantime, may we suggest....

  1. Amazing, UU! I think if there were a Sonic's there I would be extremely pleased. Cherry Limeades whenever I want? I'm down!

  2. Helen, we know that either you or someone from your office reads this. Telling the truth is so much easier than lying. Liars must have great memories and the ability to cover their tracks. That's 2 strikes against you there.

Get the pain of embarrassment over with and show us what you have regarding Target's letter of intent. It can come out now or it WILL come out later. If it doesn't embarrass you to lie, know that it embarrasses those who have supported you. Now show us the letter!

  3. I know its a blog, and you're not held to any sort of journalistic standard, however a copy of the letter/email would be just as handy to provide here as Helen's letter of intent. Otherwise, its just a bunch of hot air.

I however would be down for a Sonic. Chili Cheeze Tots FTW.

  5. Does she legally have to show Target's letter of intent if asked for it?

  6. From Uncle Steve in the "Bulls-eye" post:
**I emailed Target guest relations yesterday about the sign at WY. Check out the reply I received this AM**

    Dear Customer,

We're excited to hear you want a Target store in your community. Interest from Target guests like you is a major factor we consider when we decide to build a new store.

As you might imagine, a lot of time and work goes into determining where and when to build a Target store. There's involvement by people in the private and government areas and it may take months or even years to build a store. Sometimes Target is mentioned as an example of a possible store anchor for a project by a developer or city. I don’t have any information about a store in the area/location/construction site you mentioned.

Have more questions about Target stores, products or services? Write back, call us at (800) 440-0680, or visit us online at www.target.com. Either way, we'll do our best to help you!

Thanks for your interest in Target. We'll keep looking for more ways to serve you.

    Sincerely,

    Target Guest Relations

  8. helen? helloooooooo.....??

great work UU (and Uncle Steve too)! i doubt target's definition of "sometimes mentioned as a possible anchor" allows developments to fake their logo on shoddy plywood construction signs.

  9. To repeat:

I don’t have any information about a store in the area/location/construction site you mentioned.

Granted, the person(or machine) replying to Uncle Steve may have been mistaken, the fact remains that only one who "knows", "for sure" about Target is the one person least likely to be trusted.

  10. Could someone contact the city- I assume there is an office somewhere at City Hall that handles this type of thing and ask them if Target is actually coming? Wouldn't that be a matter of public record?

  11. Has anybody considered dialing into the Target quarterly conference call and asking the question directly? I don't follow the company, but am tempted to ask executives directly.

  12. I also forwarded the UU link on the first target logo to target HQ and got a response that they were forwarding my email and the link to UU to their Brand identity unit for investigation. We'll see what comes of it.

  13. Putting up a fake Target logo is probably not the ideal way to foster a trusting relationship with this large corporation. It certainly wouldn't convey the thought that the development is being done in a professional manner. But that's just me, I guess.

  14. Sounds like the same email many others have received.
