Lights Out - Again - On Magnolia & Leland

A reader writes: "Here we go again…

The lights are out again on the 4700 Block of N Magnolia and the 1300 Block of W Leland. The frequency of this is increasing. It used to be just about once a month."
We used to think, naively, that this was the work of the gangs or copper thieves, or another reason to worry about Uptown's crumbling infrastructure, which the Wilson Yard TIF funds were designated to fix. But then we read Ald. Shiller's website, and we realized that it's just practice for "Earth Hour 2009." There's nothing there about the gangs, or the rampant copper thefts, or the crumbling infrastructure - actually, very little about Uptown at all - so it must be so!

  1. the lights are out for one reason....so the ultra bright, huge, gigantic flood lights at WY can be on for 27/7 .... they need to suck light soruce elsewhere to power the million watt bulbs...

seriously....they leave the flood lights on all day and all night...lights my apartment up like the afternoon sun...

(they must need the light to start work now at 3AM instead of the typical 5AM)

  2. What a bunch of BS.

Also, what is the deal with parking on Magnolia? It is impossible to park now.

  3. If the lights are out the smart thing to do would be to call 311 and then call the Bureau of Electricity and tell them about your problems.

I don't know how if the complaining will actually get the lights turned back on.

  4. Green Giant -- readers can walk and chew gum at the same time. Calls have been made. The purpose of a blog, which perhaps you don't understand, is to inform neighbors of what's going on in the neighborhood. Lights being off in the same spot - AGAIN - is one of those things. An informed community is a GOOD thing.

Now, did you make a call to 311 or the or Bureau of Electricity, or did you just write to complain?

  6. That would be great! I know a lot of us have already made calls, but the more the merrier. Thank you!

  7. the parking is most likely construction workers...the street i live on are majority construction workers from WY..they take a huge percentage of the spots on my block ....a lot of others in the area have also mentioned this...

  9. The lights are out because they're probably selling rock out of the row houses at 4700 N. Magnolia.

  10. The lights were out last night well past 10 pm on both sides of the street of Leland between Magnolia and Malden and also on both sides of Magnolia between Leland and Lawrence.

I called 311 for probably the 15th time over the past two months as I live on this block. I have been given report numbers. Last night I called again and that was the 1st time they told me I needed to be transferred to Streets & Sanitation number, where I filed yet another report.

I have repeatedly called 311 about lights out for at least 3 months ... they usually get "fixed" after a couple days of calling and then the problem starts all over again.

Last night when I called 311, they transferred me to Streets & sanitation and I filed yet another report. They provide a report number if you ask, so i encourage everyone to request the report number and note the date and time you called and perhaps we can start sharing these report numbers here for daily follow-up.

  12. they're out frequently on Winnemac between Clark and Broadway as well. A neighbor had her car stolen one night when the lights were out. CAPS tried to support us by contacting the city, but to no avail. It's still a problem. I've reported it to the Bureau of Electricity, which promised a follow-up call, but no go.

  13. You are looking for a reason when their probably isn't one. It is not an attempt to save tax payers money (hahahaha), nor is anyone thinking green.
The lights on Malden between Wilson and Montrose are constantly on during the DAY (I don't even notice anymore-this post made me go look).

The city doesn't have a plan besides to tax you and use those dollars aimlessly.

  14. Flying Nun,

The lights on Winnemac between Clark and Broadway have been a problem for a couple years. They used to be out about once a month, but recently it has been about once a week/week and a half (I'm near Glenwood and Winnemac).
