Don't Lose That Spare Tire!

We're hearing that spare tires and tire covers are being taken from vehicles in Uptown, particularly on the 4700 block of Magnolia.

Folks are waking up to find their tire cover removed, and either the spare tire is missing or else an attempt has been made to remove a locked-down tire.

Please keep an eye out for anyone fiddling with a tire cover and call 911 if it seems like a suspicious situation.

  1. Add the West 1400 block of Argyle as well - I saw a SUV with the covering for the spare pried off this AM while walking the dog.

  2. someone broke into my car (4400 block of beacon), rummaged around but didn't take anything. sadly, jeeps are not the most secure of vehicles.

  3. Just wanted to add that some of these incidents are happening in gated parking lots, not just on the street!

  4. kourtney, my neighbor had his car broken into last night as well. 4600 block of Beacon. When I left the apartment, I saw his car window was smashed in and his bag was on the ground. I hope they didn't get anything. But, it's clear that they're grabbing whatever they can.

  5. My sympathies to those who've experienced this. I've been there -- but only once. Here is what I learned, and I hope you'll pass it on:

Anyone with an external spare tire on their SUV and parking in the open, whether in a gated lot or on the street, should invest in locking lug nuts and a thick, flexible bicycle-type lock. They're not expensive, and they're fairly effective deterrents.

Also, and many many people have said it here on UU, don't leave ANYTHING visible inside your vehicle, no matter how seemingly benign. No clothing, no boxes, no spare change, books, papers, NOTHING. EVER.

  6. Thanks for the heads up. Last year in almost the same area the same thing happened to me Kourtney. I think they were only looking for cash.

They rummaged my car, but took nothing. Not even a cd?

I felt violated that my car had been ransacked, but I also felt hurt that my taste in music apparently stinks.

  7. There was a car parked on the 1000 block of W Buena whose spare tire was stolen. I suspect it happened last night.

  8. Crazy. Last May, someone literally stole the entire front bumper of my fiance's Trailblazer on the 4400block of Dover... a mere 3 weeks after we bought our condo. Welcome to the neighborhood!
