UBB As A Canvas: Taggers Add Their Signatures

This is quite literally sickening. Taggers just couldn't wait to get to put their filthy little marks on the beautiful newly rehabbed Uptown Broadway Building. They hit the new granite base and the spandrel glass at the southern end of the building.

The building's agents are aware of the damage (in fact, the photos came from them), so no need to call Graffiti Blasters this time. But, please, folks, call 311 when you see graffiti to have it removed and call 911 if you see it in progress. Uptown residents have been working with police to prosecute taggers and have obtained judgments, community service and punitive damages against them in quite a few cases ... let's make sure that those who deface our buildings know there will be consequences for their actions.

  1. What does this say to prospective tenants about the safety of their business investment?
Clean-up of the tagging is the easy part. Creating an environment that discourages this behavior is the responsibility of our local leaders. Thanks Helen.

  2. They need to make the punishment so sever they think twice about doing it.

I say 6 months in jail and every day they have to go out in a chain gang and remove graffiti and pick up trash and a $5000 dollar fine.

  3. I think those people should stand at the locations they tagged and have passer-bys spray paint on them -- let's see how they feel about that!

  4. I can't figure out what the bigger eyesore is at that corner - the graffito or the Majestic clothing store?

  5. It's unfortunate that we are currently enjoying an era of very little accountablility and almost no consequence for our actions. We see "important" politicos busted for prostitution, not paying taxes, lying to the electorate, illegal use of tax money, etc., etc., etc. What are the young people to expect but not much of anything for their malfaisance. Latest news in the Sun Times states the second in command to Jody Weiss had property searched upon which they found drugs and fire arms. Little will come of it except a tantrum by Da Mare.

  7. Sassy - nothing wrong with Majestic as a business - although I don't even think its open anymore - problem is with the building and deferred maintenance from the CTA:
