Sheridan & Foster Dominick's Rendering

Update: We added a much better rendering (above, click to enlarge) showing the corner entrance on Sheridan and Foster. (courtesy "SpyGuy" on SkyscraperPage Forum)
Demolition is slated to begin on the current Dominick's (built in 1978) this summer, with projected construction lasting one year. Dominick's is considering making this upcoming 39,000 SF store its Chicago "flagship store." This store will also have a full-service Starbucks located just inside the Sheridan and Foster corner entrance. See the entire .pdf proposal below:

  1. No. But there will be a 39,000 sq ft piece of property north of the store left over. Rumors are of a 400 unit building.

  2. I assume this will be a Dominick's Fresh Food store. Those are pretty nice. We need more stores like that around Uptown. I'm tired of the boring Jewel on Montrose and Sheridan.. Same old Same Old.

  3. I think Dominick's is also planning to reopen their now-closed facility at Ridge & Pratt - one of the dumbest moves in recent Chicago business history was the removal of a major grocery chain in a heavily residential neighborhood with no competitor within easy distance.

Must be a sign that times are getting better for D's - those ill-advised closings and neglect of operating stores were due to their business beign in trouble a few years ago.

  4. So happy its not ending up suburban style. No more surface parking lots or buildings that don't come up to the lot line, especially at corners! I'm thrilled as I live about 1 block away! I wish they had included a few small storefronts for other businesses, but they would probably sit empty for years.

I looked at the current footprint of the building, parking lot and motel property on Google maps. It appears the portion that will be a two level parking structure at the north end of the new building will only take up about 1/3 or so of the area of the current building. Are there really plans for a residential building directly to the north of the new store? As long as this doesn't end up a huge parking lot for the Saddle & Cycle club or something, I'm for seeing the property developed into something. Up to 8-10 stories there would be appropriate. Although I would be happy to see more retail space and obviously its already zoned commercial.

How many years did it take for the Saddle & Cycle club to redo and landscape their parking lot on Sheridan? That was an eyesore on Sheridan Rd for a while after they acquired it. If Dominick's sells them the extra property, someone needs to make sure they landscape and shield it appropriately from Sheridan Road right away.

  5. Wait. A rebuilt grocery store with an entrance in the front?

    Such a novel idea.

  6. OMG. I almost had an orgasm looking at this. I live two blocks away and this would be a great addition to the neighborhood (not to mention upping my property value). Hooray!

  7. This looks lovely, and I'm delighted to see a better use of the corner. Our neighborhood--with its cheap little strip malls, vacant lots, and parking lots spreading like a fungus--looks so desolate. How nice to see some better commercial development not too far away from the 'hood.

  8. The store itself is fairly decent but the loading zone and handicapped parking need some improvement. The bike racks get preference over handicapped parking. Dominicks bought two properties and are centering their store in the middle.
There are definite plans to sell the excess land to the east and the north. Of course Saddle and Cycle is planning on getting it for a parking lot. No one else but Mary Ann Smith has been mentioning this. She has been talking about their needing a larger lot. She should know. She has her fund raisers there and her donors have to park on the grass. Sue Ellen Long, who owns lots of Uptown,is a member.

  9. This is very similar to the Dominicks that opened a year or two ago 2021 W Chicago Ave in terms of interior layout and rooftop parking. However, the ramps are different, and this store appears to be larger.

  10. I just moved to Chicago and currently reside at the Sheridan-Edgewater apartments. I think this would be a great move on Dominick's behalf. I always see the parking lot either mostly empty or with screaming kids playing baseball at midnight. I was wondering if anyone could give me more information on that Saddle and Cycle club? Is it only for 'special' people? ha ha. I can't find any information on it!!

  11. Any news on this? I was thinking it was going to be demolished this fall. I for one intend to be there with a bottle of champagne when the first wrecking ball is released.

  12. Dmstarr, I heard that they are selling down their stock and not replacing/re-ordering items because the plan is to close in about a month. They will be closed for at least a year.

Also, the pharmacy is set to move across the street next to Early-to-Bed. [Cue Viagra joke here.]

  13. Gayle - The Ridge/Pratt Dominick's has already reopened. I agree - one of the dumbest moves.

  14. I'm excited! The old Dominick's was dumpy and sparsely staffed. I'd usually end up going a few extra blocks to Jewel. I can't wait for a starbucks and huge grocery store so close to me!

  15. I am considering opening a business in the Breakers strip next to the Enterprise rental location. What kind of business do you guys think would do well in the area? I live in Park Tower and think we could really use a decent quick breakfast and lunch place. Any comments or ideas?

  16. A BBQ joint like Heckey's or Smoque!

That's what I want at least....

  17. Anyone heard anything about this 400 unit building next to the new Dominick's? 400 Units?! That's gotta be taller than 15-20 stories right? Seems like that could be a nightmare and wanted to see if anyone knew if that was starting this summer or not.
