I agree that the style is very much like that used on the cover of the book and the movie promotion, some of it is different, the style of the "S" for instance but the effect of splattered red paint is in keeping with the splattered blood that appeared in the Manson Family's original message. The original message was left in blood on the refrigerator in the LaBianca home after the occupants were slaughtered. The previous evening the Family murdered actress Sharon Tate, the older first cousin of one of my college roommates, Abigail Folger and three others. It is always good to remember what Manson did, for thirty years now we have seen him as the wack-job with the swastika tatoos on his forehead (now there's a look!) who has a bi-annual date with the California Prisoner Parole Board.
The original footage of the Manson Family in public appearances was a serious study in cult behavior, those people made the Moonies look like members of the Saddle & Cycle Club. As time goes by I have noticed people with Charlie Manson shirts and I have usually assumed that it is a statement meant to provoke and outrage. Some Uptown tagger may very well have decided on Helter Skelter due to its provocativeness, likely after seeing the movie or reading the book. It seems hard to believe that today there is a small group dedicating themselves to Helter Skelter, which according to Manson was a coming series of race wars predicted in the lyrics of the White Album (wtf?), hopefully the final four letters (symbols?) are not a reference to Axle Rose. On the other hand the tagger may have simply misspelled Helen.
There is one of these tags between Wolcott and Damen on either Ainsle, Winona, or Winnemac (can't remember exactly)It looks the same except whoever did it used white paint. I guess that red wouldn't stand out enough on a brown brick building.
You did a good job with the history of Manson and his "family". The only thing you left out was that at the Labianca murders Helter Skelter was actually spelled "Healter Skelter". That is how one of the defendents Krenwinkel (who was attempting to claim she did not go into the house)got tripped up on the stand when they asked her to spell Helter Skelter.
Seen today on the concrete barricade at Montrose and Kenmore surrounding Wilson Yard.
