Shooting On The Edge...

...edge of the 46th ward that is. Nice we can share our wealth with the folks who butt up against our ward in the 800 block of West Grace in Lakeview. Read about it at the Tribune here
and at the Sun-Times here.

  2. See, Uptown is no more dangerous than the rest of the city; this wasn't even in our ward. Uptown is a clean, safe paradise with a wonderfully diverse citizenry that represents Bohemian living at its finest, unfettered by the suffocating rules that have choked out the local color and joyous self-expression from sad, cookie-cutter neighborhoods like Lincoln Park. Uptown is our little hideaway from the drab, conformist world. What do you call a place that provides the liberty to pee on the sidewalk, get blown in the alley, sleep on any patch of grass or bust a cap in a homie who shows you disrespect, at any time or place? Most would call that Heaven, but we call it Home.

  3. We are pretty sure that the 800 block of West Grace is the 46th Ward. Can someone verify that?

  4. Well I hope Rep. Harris follows through on his promise of additonal meetings with the community because there hasn't been any improvement since the first meeting.

  5. Hey Helen A. Handbasket,

Normally I hate internet acronyms, but that deserves a ROFLMAO.

  6. Looks like it to me, UU. Here is a PDF of the 46th ward. It goes as far south as Brompton and Stratford. UNC did a study and found that 10% of residents didn't even know they lived in the 46th ward.

  7. WindyCityEagle, thanks for the shout-out. Your internet acronyms are welcome here. After all, self-expression is the currency of our beloved Uptown.

Saskia, thanks for posting the map. But keep in mind that boundaries are limits, and those are something we try to discourage in Uptown. Society should be shaped by each individual, not the other way around!

  8. Helen.a.handbasket: You deserve your raise with your witty rhetoric. Don't let them take that away from you!!

  9. Darn you, Helen A. Handbasket!!! You are making me laugh with your sarcasm and I really don't want to because I try to stay constructively critical on this site. But this is Uptown and I guess we have been given some liberty to yield to temptation...so I will. *hee-hee*

  10. 800 Grace is part of the NEW and improved 46th Ward. I worked the poles in the New York, and it was SOOOOO sad to see all the people going to work out in the morning and just pass the poles.

They don't see any problems and just love the Whole Foods Alderman Tunney brought to them. They have NO clue that the beatch is their adlerbeast.

    Thanks for the map!

  11. Actually up until a 1.5 years ago I lived at 844 West Grace. Me and my neighbors knew all too well that Schiller was our Alderman. We all know she screwed up the zoning on the old Marigold Bowl property that allowed the high rise to go in there in the first place.

The good news was we were close to Tunney's ward so we had some nice areas to walk to...not so much in my new home in Sheridan Garden.

  12. One newspaper says it happened in Lakeview, while the other said it happened in Wrigleyville. So much for accurate reporting!

  13. Try reading the comments under the Tribune article. I was pretty pissed off at this one and said so.

'The garbage in Uptown is trickling downhill to Lakeview. You all can thank Alderman Schiller in Uptown for housing the excons, homeless, mentall ill, unemployed, welfare queens and general crud of society that is now flowing south'

  14. The "garbage in Uptown" was always there...it's called the Hotel Chateau on Broadway.

Take a look at the difference in street development on Halsted right when you enter the 46th Ward...huge change. Broadway and Halsted north to Irving Park is filled with crappy stores and vacant spaces. South you have nice restaurants, Whole Foods, bars, etc.

  15. ah, fast typing again....thank you so much billyjoe...thank you thank you...what would life be without out...i could only imagine...

  16. I have never understood the ward boundaries, especially how you can be in the 44th ward on the west side of fremont and then the 46th on the east side. It isn't a major street so it makes no sense that is is the boundary line. Too bad we can just draw the line down Irving and let Tunney clean out the area south of Irving on Broadway/Halsted. It seems like there is so much potential around the corner of Grace and Broadway and Sheridan and Broadway. While some people in the adjacent area know what is going on just a few blocks north of the 44th ward (and in this case practically in it), many are clueless when it comes to the impact the 46th ward alderperson has on our neighborhood.

  17. Well then tell them, wrigley resident! Helen gets most of her campaign funds from outside the ward. Why shouldn't the next opposition candidate get an influx of volunteers and cash from Wrigleyville, the "other Uptown" and Edgewater??? Shiller is now part of the Daley machine and its time for a change.

  18. I'm very much in opposition to Ald. Shiller, but "Wrigley Resident" is a bit off with his "few blocks north" comment. I still say that Buena Park is nicer than that northern section of Lakeview by the Hotel Chateau and the flame-scortched Gill Park Cooperative.

Tunney won't help you do a thing. He's part of the whole "dump 'em in Uptown" grand scheme.

  19. A little off topic but this thread brings up a question I've been wondering about. For residents on ward boundary streets, are the wards split down the middle of the street? We live right on the ward boundary on Dover - is the west side of the street Schulter's and east side Shiller's?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm on the West side of Dover, we're in Schulter's ward. But, if like me, you used to go to Broncho Billy and you take the Red Line everyday then Shiller's shennanigans are just as much your issue as the people on the East side of the street.

  21. Ok calm down everyone. Crime is EVERYWHERE even on yes, The Northside!!!! I agree with Helen A Handbasket who stats 'Uptown a is wonderfully diverse citizenry' but the agreement stops there. UPTOWN IS DIRTY AND NOT SAFE but that hasnt stopped me from shopping for wigs and hair weave at that area's beauty shops (Broadway and Wilson), or from getting my hair braided at Clem's (well past dark hours). Maybe this is because I grew up on the city's west side (Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods) so I'm use to broad daylight shootings and purse snatchings and beat downs. Helen, they use to 'bust a cap in their homies' but now they are busting caps in us (law abiding citizens with careers and goals)!!! WE CAN'T STAND FOR THAT. We have to differentiate ourselves from Englewood, Austin, Garfield Park and not let Uptown go by the wayside. Let's live in Uptown but call the police regularly and go to cap meetings and other meetings to stay informed. We can't let our neighborhoods (in Uptown, Rogers Park, Edgewater..) be taken over by punk ass thugs.
