Wilson L Update

Success! Well, at least partial. You may remember the numerous lights that were burned out all around our beloved Wilson L station. We are happy to report that the 4 lights at the auxiliary entrance on Wilson have been replaced (who knows how long they have been burned out). The 4 lights under the tracks on Broadway have yet to be replaced but the station was a flurry of activity this afternoon as police caution tape was blocking part of the sidewalk for work. We can only hope the workers are there to replace the remaining lights and maybe even give the station a good ol' scrub down.

  1. This has nothing to do with the posting - more to do with the picture. How do some of these businesses in Uptown stay alive and make any money? For instance, those in the Wilson-Broadway Mall, the Pizza Factory on Sheridan, and many of the other small and shady looking business in and around Uptown. Just curious.

  2. I'd imagine some of them have very low rents. The Majestic Store, at Leland and Broadway, supposedly pays the CTA only about $300-$400 monthly in rent.

  3. The pizza factory on Sheridan looks sketchy but they have an active takeout business. (It is called C.W. Napkin) They deliver pizza and sandwich type things.

  4. I was just looking over the article in today's Red Eye. It states that Uptown is Chicago's #1 most diverse 'hood.
Based on the info there 52% of Uptown residents are classified as low income. Ok, I might be called "classist" here, but I would think that people with little $ would shop at places that are inexpensive. I suspect these places would be that way because they don't invest in physical improvements.

  5. chiguy, I would love to see the "criteria" that was used to come up with this, and you're correct in your assumption - only makes sense...

I don't put too much faith in polls, stats, or the like. It's all bs filled with smoke and mirrors. Just like the alderbeast herself...

    Have a great week,

  7. I appreciate that they have changed the lights, hopefully with some HID Sodium lamps or similar bright, long-life product. But who wants to see that sh*thole at the Wilson stop lit up like a beacon for our "diverse 'hood"? Not me.

Someone suggested we bombard the CTA with demands to tear down the unused tracks that allow for shady, sketchy dangerous areas for god knows what to go down. I think we really should demand that this happen, because Wilson stop used to be so beautiful and majestic. We need that back!

And yes, the concentration of poverty in Uptown helps some businesses thrive and causes others to fail, so be selective where you spend your money, and please don't give it to anyone who donates to useless, indifferent public officials, and let them know you aren't spending there!

  8. Andy, you ask who wants to see the Wilson L lit up? I care about ME being seen lit up! As a female who gets home for work at 7:30 p.m., it's sometimes worrisome to walk home from the L, especially in the winter when it's so dark. Bright lights help.
