Happy 4th Of July From Uptown Update

The weather is absolutely gorgeous this afternoon so we hope everyone enjoys this Independence Day. Today is a great day to take advantage of Uptown's great lakefront. Throw a burger on the grill for us.

And don't forget to register for the corn-dog-eating competition at Crew on Saturday!

If you're like us (coughprocrastinatorscough) and haven't made plans for viewing fireworks tonight, the News-Star (in the reporting style that makes it our "News of Choice" for Uptown) gives a few local suggestions.
The Saddle and Cycle Club at 900 W. Foster offers one of the state's most lavish fireworks displays within walking distance or just a quick el ride away from the Foster Beach. Or, crash a party at one of the Edgewater high rises. Better yet, commandeer a boat and see the 'works from the lake. The fireworks are free to all community residents as a courtesy of the Saddle and Cycle Club. The fun starts [Friday] between 8 and 8:30 p.m., or as soon as it gets dark.

Evanston is another popular place for fireworks at the Clark Street Beach at 400-499 Clark Street, with a concert starting at 7:30, and the opening blast at 9:15 p.m.

Of course, there's always the illegal fireworks display at Rogers Park's Loyola Park, if you like getting hit by burning embers or getting a hole burned in the roof of your garage. That gathering lasts until all the beer or crack presumably run out.

  1. The lack of response from Heller regarding the violence is suddenly clear to me - an awknowledgement of the gang/gun problems would further thwart the Olympic chances. Daley and Wies are both in the same denial mode as the Heller.
Much like Sadam's press guy, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, theyre spouting "there's no crime here" while gun shots go off in the background. Chicago will NOT get the Olympics - over Paris? Forget it. Nevermind the hell the games would bring to home owners and renters alike. It's Daley and Heller trying to protect the pipe-dream of international games here in Chi at the expense of neighborhood safety.

  2. If Beijing can get the Olympics, I don't see why Chicago couldn't. Paris was not even in the running for the 2016 Olympics; the short list, in addition to Chicago, is now Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. Chicago has a pretty decent shot. If anything derails Chicago's bid, it's going to have a lot more to do with international animosity to US policies than with local gun violence.

What "hell to home owners and renters" are you referring to, by the way?

  3. lol

Who cares number 1 and number 2 I don't think the things that happened this weekend downtown will affect the Olympics at all. During the Olympics we will have the Military here protecting the venue. Shot first and ask questions later will be the orders.

Also their won't be low life gang bangers going to Olympics events because they won't be free.

  4. OK, I'm lost, what do any of these comments have to do with the 4th of July? Are we just doing random 4th of July venting? Fine, I'll join in.

My daughter left the light in our and it wouldn't start this morning, it sucked!
