Uptown Farmer's Market Starts Tomorrow

Make sure to stop by Truman College tomorrow from 8am-3pm for the Uptown Farmer's Market. If the offering at this year's market is as varied as last year's, we are in for a real treat. This year's market will be every Thursday till October 23. Mark your calendars.

  1. One person selling brownies is hardly a "real treat". (unless those brownies were laced with something)

Having a farmers' market during the day on a weekday was a very poor choice by Alderman Shiller, but if she was trying to keep the average working people in the ward from going her plan worked flawlessly.

  2. Awww, that is absolutely awesome!! I'm so glad to have something like this so close; however, I'm also bummed because I'm always at work during the market times.

  3. I don't think the market date and time was Shiller's choice (although I could be wrong). There's a department of the city that's in charge of farmer's markets, and I bet they do the scheduling.

If someone knows better, please correct me.

Hope springs eternal that Uptown will actually get PRODUCE in our farmer's market this year!

  4. Everyone knows only white condo owners eat vegetables!

But seriously though, how can they justify calling it a farmers market when all they sell is sugar filled pastries?

What Alderman in Chicago wouldn't have influence enough with the City's Events Office to work with them on the time for an event in their own ward?

Seriously, how many working class Uptown residents do you suppose can make it during that time? Making it on the weekend serves everyone except those who work weekends. It even serves the out of work, seniors and homeless.

What's wrong with serving everybody or at least the optimum number of people?

  6. I do think Edgewater's farmer's market is on a weekday too. Don't forget that vendors might be going to a couple of these farmer's markets and that might factor into what times they are held as well.

  7. In all fairness, I think there are plenty of farmers markets around town that operate during the workweek.

On the other hand, those other farmers markets sell actual vegetables...

  8. Chicago Neighborhood Farmer's Markets

According to this 9 out of 21 farmers markets are on a weekday, so it isn't completely abnormal. My wife is checking this one out today. Hopefully there will be some good stuff.

  9. I walked by this morning on my way to the El, around 8:40. I forgot to look, but I think I would have noticed if there were stands set up and people selling things. I hope it gets better as the summer goes on. I would LOVE to buy fresh produce and flowers.

  10. That's about as much as a "farmer's market" as the hispanic people on the corner of wilson and beacon selling elote!

  12. My wife said it was 1 stand selling pastries. Dang. I was hoping to get some good veggies!

  13. I went to Truman about 2 pm and couldn't find any stands at all!

Our "farmers markets" have all the charm of a second-day-bread sale at the Wonder Outlet Store.

  14. Any pics from yesterday's Uptown Market to compare and contrast?
