Walk, Don't Run - 10% Off For UU Readers At Express Chicken & Ribs

Folks, we just got back from Express Chicken & Ribs at 1319-21 W. Wilson (Wilson and Beacon) and are happy to report that the owner has offered a 10% discount to our readers. Just go in and say you want the "Uptown Update Special" and you will get 10% off your order, excluding specials.
We can report that the food is made fresh and the interior is clean and inviting. The owner, Abbey Olukoya, lives on the southside and commutes to Uptown each day to work. He is also looking to expand into breakfast and is in talks with the powers-that-be to get outdoor seating.
We had the chicken tenderloin (strips) with turnip greens and cole slaw. Yum! Call ahead at 773-275-5760 for carry-out orders or dine in their spacious dining area. Go check it out!

  2. Way to go, Updater!

You've made the jump from cyberspace to boots on the ground.

We're going to have to find a deli to name a sandwich after us - "The WhatTheHelen" will be full of baloney with a side of assorted nuts!

    Wheeeee!

  3. Too late. I already had a St. Paddy's weekend steak and salad. Later to be washed down with a Guinness and a hooker.

I'll post some more thoughts later.

This is an example of why we have to spread the word about Uptown Update.

    Promoting good Uptown businesses.

I imagine the owner is happily surprised to see more business walking through his door. He seems like a good guy.

  4. Awesome! Thanks, UU. I've never been quite sure off whether to give that place a go, or not.

A recommendation from y'all will definitely point my shoes in that direction next time I get the munchies.

Now, if I happen to see drunk dude in there with some crazy hooker, I'll introduce myself to ya' IP.

  6. Express Chicken: I'd recommend it and look forward to hearing what others think. Outside it is nothing fancy but it's very clean inside. My food was made to order, so it took about 15 minutes during which I parked my car at home and walked back over.

My chicken was tasty, piping hot and moist inside. Tonight it's gloomy and damp, so this was really nice comfort food! It was freshly fried and the owner had it in a warming oven ready to give to me (I am not a chicken-skin conoisseur, so someone else can comment on this...I thought it was fine). I got some greens as a side, which were also tasty.

I plan to go back and try some other things like the jollof rice when he has them. Because they fry your chicken to order instead of having old pieces under one of those heat lamps, he gave me a menu flyer and said next time I could call 15 minutes ahead and just pick the food up.

As far as the discount is concerned, when I said I read about it on the internet, he asked if it was Uptown Update! :) But honestly, I figured he could use the extra $1 more than I could - I'm just happy to find another small independent restaurant to support.

  7. Did anyone happen to notice how late this place is open?

  8. This is the most unhealthy, fattening, artery clogging food that can be eaten. It makes me sick to my stomach to even look at that gross pic. Anyone eating this crap is obviously morbidly obese or will be.

Another touchy-feely vegetarian loser heard from. Anyone who won't eat a rib tip needs help.
