Uptown's Burgeoning Fashion Scene

The city of Chicago has launched a new website to showcase places to shop for fashions by local designers. Uptown is one of the neighborhoods featured on the website. Uptown, along with Bridgeport and Beverly, are described as having a "burgeoning" fashion scene .

The city website has a page for Uptown with one boutique listed - Elda De La Rosa Couture, which is located at 5555 N Sheridan. Last time we checked, the 5500 block of North Sheridan is not located in Uptown.

Read the article from the Chicago Tribune here.

Check out the city-sponsored website here.

  1. I thought I was the only person who owned that vest. And wow, what a sweet ride. He has to have all the Uptown ladies chasing after him!

  3. I'm sure if that man who posed for your photograph knew he was going to be mocked due to his appearance he would not have let you take it.

  5. The photo itself is a cool character piece, but like many things on this website, the way it is being used tends to mock the poor in our community. It's not witty commentary to juxtapose the image with the article, it's just mean--and spawns further meanness in your anonymous readers.

This site started out good, with informative pieces or links to more info on the community. But despite it's recent publicity, it's falling short of what it could be.

  6. Yes. I agree. This photo is particularly insensitive when you think about how the fashion community "cool hunts" gritty urban locales for inspiration and then mass produces various looks often using sweatshop labor.

It is actually a very good photo in that this man seems to have a simple joy about him that so many people with far more $$$ search for but never find. Why don't you take this picture down?

  9. Mr. Steven Crane:

Read the posts a little closer. A lot of the bashing that you see comes from people who are just so fed up with the lies & the polarization of the ward. Not all people living in condos are heartless & selfish and not every poor person is a bum. The class warfare is mostly benefiting one person and nothing good will come of it in the long run.

I'll say it again, UU. Please take down this picture. Using this photo in this context ridicules this man unnecessarily. It's a great shot but why don't you use it to do a story of how he uses his cart to scavenge or how many places he had to go to in order to get 3 meals today.

  11. Is this even a picture from Uptown, or just a "file photo" from somewhere. I can't see any distinguishing features that indicate where it was taken.

  12. I think the point of this post was to illustrate the fact that the Tribune doesn't even know where Uptown is and maybe show that Uptown has no retail to even purchase any sort of "fashion" if you wanted to. And yes, I don't think the photo was taken in Uptown.
I think it would be great for people to start their own blogs so they could share another point of view. We need more people covering things in Uptown. Lord knows there is enough to blog about.

  13. I like this blog. I like the post. I only objected to the photo because I think it is insensitive on a number of counts. The picture implied that this person was an Uptown resident and it seemed cruel to use this person's misfortune for irony. 'nuff said.

  14. Next time you'll have to use a public figure living in Uptown with poor taste in clothing.

  15. I don't see the point of posting a picture of a homeless person in order to mock his appearance. It's petty and bitchy. Usually a person who does this type of thing isn't happy with his or her own life. Shame on you uptown updater.
