Anti-Condo Protest In Rogers Park

Click here to check out this video from Rogers Park this past Friday. Anti-condo protesters gathered in front of a slow-selling condo building for a "sleep out" which apparently never even happened. Towards the end of the video, watch our favorite reporter Lorraine Swanson grill Alderman Joe Moore on how he intends to keep affordable housing in his ward. When the questioning gets a bit tough, watch the protesters burst into bizarre song to divert attention. Also, we expect to see more protests like this in Uptown, so this video is likely a little bit of foreshadowing of what's to come. Our thanks to Tom Mannis and the "Rogers Park Bench."

  2. Well if I was an apartment building owner and everyone treated my building like shit, I'd sell it or redevelop it. Status quo needs to change. Why pay rent when you can pay yourself, and with rising rents, it makes sense to spend a little more to own your own home.

  3. These protests are so ridiculous. Utterly extremist craziness. The people involved need to move on. They are about ten years too late, and nothing will change now.

  4. "Anti-Condo Protest" Dosn't that mean the demonstration was in support of condos?

  5. I think that would be an anti-condo protest protest. :-)

  6. Does the white girl in the video always talk like she is at a black church or only around black people?

  7. To those who want to save themselves 21 minutes of viewing time, the first speaker says that RP has lost over 1000 units of rental housing.

Then Joe Moore speaks and states that he has created over 1000 units of affordable rental housing.

Maybe those guys need to compare notes before they both speak?

Can't wait to see the next issue of the News-Star!

  8. That's Rev. Pagan Banks. Her whole schtick is to incite the crowd with her Amen's.

God, I love Rogers Park. Amen.

45 years later: Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you.

  10. Ummm, that site is produced by ardent Socialists(they have a banner proclaiming so). I think we've proven that communism doesn't work, they may want to join the 21st century.

If these people really want affordable housing, then they need to stop down-zoning all the properties in the area. Land comes at a steep premium, the sky is virtually free. The only way you can have affordable housing in a city is by building up, probably in the neighborhood of 20-30 stories. Unfortunately we don't want that anymore, which means the poor people are going to have to go elsewhere.
